  61. 61. speech.”11 Yahweh said to him,“Who made the humanmouth? Who makes himmute or deaf, seeing orblind? Is it not I, Yahweh?
  62. 62. 12 Now go! I willhelp you speak and I willteach you what to say.”13 Moses said, “Please,Lord, send someone else.”14 Then the Lord’s angerburned against Moses,
  63. 63. and He said, “Isn’t Aaronthe Levite your brother? Iknow that he can speakwell. And also, he is onhis way now to meet you.He will rejoice when hesees you.
  64. 64. 15 You will speak withhim and tell him what tosay. I will help both youand him to speak and willteach you both what todo.
  65. 65. 16 He will speak to thepeople for you. He will beyour spokesman, and youwill serve as God to him.” Exodus 4:10-16
  66. 66. With just a cursoryreading of scripture it iseasy to see how Moses,Gideon, and Jeremiahquestioned Godconcerning His plan fortheir lives.
  67. 67. It is not as easy to see howAdam questioned Godconcerning His plan forhis life. When you studyscripture, however, thefollowing things becomeapparent about Adamquestioning God.
  68. 68. 1) He listened to his wiferather than to God(Genesis 3:6 & 3:17)2) He ate the forbiddenfruit in directdisobedience to Godscommandment (same twoverses)
  69. 69. 3) He sewed fig leavestogether to cover up (3:7mans efforts and mansway, not Gods way)4) He was afraid (3:10 notat all Gods plan)
  70. 70. 5) He hid (3:8 & 3:10 notGods plan to be hiddenfrom God)6) He blamed God (3:12that woman You gaveme is what caused this)
  71. 71. By studying Adamsquestioning of God wesee that we dont have tosay “I dont know how tospeak” or “Im only ayouth” or somethingsimilar to question God.
  72. 72. Often our actions orinactions question Godlouder than words.God calls us to service inHis kingdom despite ourinadequacies.
  73. 73. Little Johnny announcedto his parents on the firstmorning that he was tostart to school, “Sendsomeone else, I can’t dothis.”
  74. 74. When his parents asked“Why can’t you do this?”Johnny replied, “Duh! Ican’t go to school. I can’tread nor write.”
  75. 75. God specializes inworking through ourinadequacies. When we allow Him toaccomplish His workthrough our inadequacies,it brings Him much glory!
  76. 76. Even though we don’tknow what next weekholds, we know Whoholds next week!
  77. 77. Jeremiah 1:6b-7a6b“…I don’t know how tospeak since I am only ayouth.”7 Then the Lord said tome: Do not say, “I amonly a youth,”
  78. 78. Moses may have thoughtabout using the age thingas an excuse also…Acts 7:23, 28-3023 “As Moses wasapproaching the age of 40,he decided to visit his
  79. 79. brothers, the Israelites… 28 “Do you want to kill me, thesame way you killed theEgyptian yesterday?”29 “At this disclosure,Moses fled and became anexile in the land of
  80. 80. Midian, where he fatheredtwo sons.30 After 40 years hadpassed, an angel appearedto him in the wildernessof Mount Sinai, in theflame of a burning bush.”
  81. 81. Moses was now 80 yearsold and may have wellthought of the excuse,“I’m too old for this!”Our age is not a problemfor God and He is notgoing to buy our excuses.
  82. 82. Observe how Godcountered Jeremiah’sexcuses:I don’t know how tospeak - I’ll show you.I don’t know where to go– I’ll send you and show
  83. 83. you.I’m afraid – I’ll be withyou and will deliver you.He shows us how to getpast our excuses. He has already given useverything we need to do
  84. 84. what He has called us todo.2 Peter 1:3 3 His divine power hasgiven us everythingrequired for life andgodliness through the
  85. 85. knowledge of Him Whocalled us by His ownglory and goodness.” 2 Peter 1:3
  86. 86. Jeremiah 1:88 “Do not be afraid ofanyone, for I will be withyou to deliver you. This is the Lord’sdeclaration.”
  87. 87. The most frequentcommand in Scripture is: “DO NOT FEAR!”
  88. 88. Psalm 118:66 “The Lord is for me; Iwill not be afraid. What can man do to me?”
  89. 89. Matthew 10:18-20, 2818 “You will even bebrought before governorsand kings because of Me,to bear witness to themand to the nations.
  90. 90.  19 But when they handyou over, don’t worryabout how or what youshould speak. For youwill be given what to sayat that hour,20 because you are not
  91. 91. speaking, but the Spirit ofyour Father is speakingthrough you…28 Don’t fear those whokill the body but are notable to kill the soul; rather, fear Him who is able to
  92. 92. destroy both soul andbody in hell.” Matthew 10:18-20, 28
  93. 93. Our friend who will bebaptized this next hourhas already come to thepoint that he is willing forhis baptism to be televisedregardless of the personalcosts to him & his family.
  94. 94. He told us last week thatif someone watching hisbaptism on TV would bedrawn to Christ, he wasnot afraid of what thatmight mean for himpersonally.
  95. 95. Jeremiah 1:99 “Then the Lord reachedout His hand, touched mymouth, and told me:I have now filled yourmouth with My words.”
  96. 96. The Lord touchedJeremiah’s mouth.God has been hands-onsince He formed manfrom the dust of theground in Genesis 2:7.
  97. 97. God spoke everythingelse into being but we arehandmade. He even knows howmany hairs are on yourhead!
  98. 98. Matthew 10:3030 “But even the hairs ofyour head have all beencounted.”
  99. 99. When God calls you, Heequips you.He hand delivers whatyou need to accomplishthe work He has givenyou to do.
  100. 100. Isaiah 6:5-85 “Then I said:‘Woe is me for I amruined because I am aman of unclean lips andlive among a people ofunclean lips, and because
  101. 101. my eyes have seen theKing, the Lord of Hosts.’6 Then one of theseraphim flew to me, andin his hand was a glowingcoal that he had takenfrom the altar with tongs.
  102. 102. 7 He touched my mouthwith it and said:‘Now that this hastouched your lips, yourwickedness is removedand your sin is atonedfor.’
  103. 103. 8 Then I heard the voice ofthe Lord saying:‘Who should I send?Who will go for Us?’I said:‘Here I am. Send me.’” Isaiah 6:5-8
  104. 104. Like Jeremiah, God hascalled us to stand againstsin and to proclaim theGood News of Hisforgiveness.God loves people as theyare, not as they ought to
  105. 105. be!That is Good News and itought to be a message thatis easy to share. What is your excuse?Whatever it is, God isn’tbuying it.
  106. 106. God has written His wordon our hearts and wemust let go of our fears, accept His call on ourlives and allow His wordsto move from our heartsand minds to our mouths.
  107. 107. Jeremiah 1:1010 “See, I have appointedyou today over nationsand kingdoms to uprootand tear down, to destroyand demolish, to buildand plant.”
  108. 108. The job that God wascalling Jeremiah to do wasoverwhelming. He was to go to nationsand to kingdoms andpoint out to them theirfailures, to uproot and to
  109. 109. tear down the anti-Godthings they were doing, todestroy and to demolish.Jeremiah knew that was amessage that would gethim killed and eventually,it did just that.
  110. 110. Any time we get outsideof our comfort zone weexperience fear. But God’s kingdom workis not about our comfort. We are living in akingdom that is at war!
  111. 111. He has already given uswhat we need toaccomplish the tasks Hehas called us to do.He has already given usenough grace, enoughfaith, enough courage to
  112. 112. do the job.Our response should beinstant obedience. That’s what soldiers aretrained to do – obeyinstantly.
  113. 113. Two Visions Jer 1:11-1211 Then the word ofthe Lord came to me,asking, “What do you see,Jeremiah?”I replied, “I see a branchof an almond tree.”
  114. 114. 12 The Lord said to me,“You have seen correctly, for I watch over My wordto accomplish it.” Jeremiah 1:11-12
  115. 115. Our word “almond” isfrom the Hebrew word, shaked meaning hasten.
  116. 116. The almond tree is thefirst tree to blossom eachyear (January) and is asign of the coming spring. When all the other treesare still dormant, thealmond tree comes alive!
  117. 117. Here and in Ecclesiastes12:5, the almond tree issymbolic of a watchman, signaling the coming of acertain event. In Ecclesiastes chapter 12the writer is telling of the
  118. 118. aging process and of thecertainty of death:5 “Also, they (the elderly)are afraid of heights anddangers on the road;the almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper loses its
  119. 119. spring, and the caperberry has no effect;for man is headed to hiseternal home,”The early-appearing whitebloom of the almondapparently serves as a
  120. 120. picture of the earlygraying of a person’s hair. The root from the Hebrewword shaked – almond - isthe word shoked, meaning to watchdiligently.
  121. 121. The almond treerepresents the sure timingof the Lord - just ascertain as spring willfollow winter – God’sword will come true.He watches over it!
  122. 122. We can be certain thatGod is watching to makesure His promises, purposes and threats arefulfilled.
  123. 123. Jeremiah 1:13-1413 “Again the word of theLord came to meinquiring, “What do yousee?”And I replied, “I see a
  124. 124. boiling pot, its lip tiltedfrom the north to thesouth.”14 Then the Lord said tome, “Disaster will bepoured out from thenorth on all who live in
  125. 125. the land.” Jeremiah 1:13-14
  126. 126. The second vision, a“boiling pot tilted fromthe north to the south”pictured Babylon comingfrom the north to pour outGod’s judgment on Hisrebellious people.
  127. 127. God had seen Hispeople’s sinful disregardfor Him and for His lawsand Jeremiah’sassignment was to foretellthe coming judgment.
  128. 128. Every time Jeremiah sawan almond tree he wouldbe reminded God waswatching and guiding. Each day when he saw aboiling pot he wouldremember judgment was
  129. 129. coming to an idolatrousnation.Remembering that God iswatching, being aware ofHis presence, gives us anurgency to proclaim Hismessage of repentance.
  130. 130. God warned Jeremiah thathe would face antagonismfrom his own countrymenand cautioned him to notlet those detractorsintimidate him intodisobedient silence.
  131. 131. Jeremiah would be able tostand against hostileopposition because Godwould make him strong, resistant, andimpenetrable.God does not hide the fact
  132. 132. there is cost to being aperson that He uses.We are the ones who tryto fool ourselves thatserving God shouldalways be easy andpleasurable.
  133. 133. There is also a cost ofignoring God.
  134. 134. 1 John 2:2828 “So now, little children, remain in Him, so thatwhen He appears we mayhave boldness and not beashamed before Him atHis coming.”
  135. 135. What excuses have youmade to avoid doing whatGod has called you to do?
  136. 136. God planned to disciplineJudah because the peoplehad again fallen intoidolatry. What are some of theidols in our culture?
  137. 137. Jeremiah 1:17-1917 “Now, get ready. Standup and tell themeverything that Icommand you. Do not beintimidated by them or I
  138. 138. will cause you to cowerbefore them.18 Today, I am the OneWho has made you afortified city, an ironpillar, and bronzewalls against the whole
  139. 139. land—against the kings ofJudah, its officials, itspriests, and thepopulation. 19 They will fight againstyou but never prevail overyou, since I am with you
  140. 140. to rescue you.”This is the Lord’sdeclaration. Jeremiah 1:17-19
  141. 141. In verse 17 the Lord gaveJeremiah four commands:1) Get ready2) Stand up3) Tell them everything Icommand you4) Don’t be intimidated
  142. 142. 1) Get ready because thetask would not be easy.
  143. 143. 2) Stand up in fullconfidence that he wasspeaking the words of theLord.
  144. 144. 3) Tell them everything Icommand you – Jeremiahwas not to change themessage, add to it, andnot to subtract from it.The Lord’s words were tobe delivered exactly as
  145. 145. Jeremiah had receivedthem from God.
  146. 146. 4) Jeremiah was not to beintimidated by anyone. As stated in verse 18,many of the folksJeremiah would have toface were very powerfulleaders, some in the realm
  147. 147. of politics and others inthe area of Judah’sreligion. As God’s spokesman,Jeremiah the prophet wasabove all of them.
  148. 148. If he became intimidated,God would make himcower before them eventhough these leadersshould have coweredbefore the prophet.
  149. 149. Verse 18 uses threemetaphors to describe thestrength God wouldprovide for Jeremiah inhis prophetic role:1) A fortified city2) An iron pillar
  150. 150. 3) Bronze walls againstthe whole landEach image depicts thatwhich is safe, powerful, and impenetrable –appropriate metaphors for
  151. 151. the Lord’s words inJeremiah’s mouth.Jeremiah’s messageswould be deliveredprimarily against thekings of Judah, itsofficials, its priests, and
  152. 152. the population.Despite the difficult taskand powerful peopleJeremiah faced, the Lord’sdeclaration would havegiven the prophet greatconfidence: “they will
  153. 153. fight against you butnever prevail over you, since I am with you torescue you.”During the course of his40-year propheticministry, Jeremiah would
  154. 154. endure threats, ridicule, and imprisonment. But God rescued Jeremiahin all these situations. The prophet lived to seethe fulfillment of hismessages of judgment
  155. 155. against Judah, Jerusalem, and even the Temple –devastating though theywere no matter what taskthe Lord gave Jeremiah,he remained faithful anddid exactly what God had
  156. 156. called him to do.
  157. 157. Grandparenting, listening, caregiving, and prayingare all importantministries that we can do.Visit folks who have nofamily.
  158. 158. Get involved in theproject on August 15th tohand out bottled water tothose who work here inthe downtown area.
