He taught himself how to play the piano as a child and it soon became one of his first passions. Then he began experimenting with photography in 1916, and continued to gain passion for it throughout his whole life. After going to school at Notre Dame University, he decided to become a war correspondent and spent the next three years in the pacific war. He began his career in the mid 1940s doing freelance photography. Throughout his life he was given multiple awards for his pictures or studies, he is considered one of the first photographers to take this clear of pictures of embryos because it is a very difficult thing to do. In 1973 Avedon became the lead photographer for Vogue, he shot most of the cover photos until late 1988.
