The term pizza appeared in a Latin text from the southern Italian
town of Gaeta in 997 AD. The text read that a tenant of a certain
property had to give the bishop of Gaeta “duodecim pizze,” or
twelve pizzas, every Christmas day, and another twelve on Easter
Sunday.
Hence came the word “Pizza”, but Pizza then was nothing similar to
the Pizza now.
