llamados a ser muy cuidadosos con nuestra
vida en este desierto que es el mundo.
•Si no estamos bien preparados y
fortalecidos en la fe del Señor Jesucristo,
podemos sucumbir ante las seducciones y
tentaciones que el mundo ofrece.

Editor's Notes
Exodus 32:6-20 (NKJV) Then they rose early on the next day, offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. [7] And the Lord said to Moses, "Go, get down! For your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves. [8] They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, 'This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!' " [9] And the Lord said to Moses, "I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people! [10] Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation." . . . [19] So it was, as soon as he came near the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing. So Moses' anger became hot, and he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. [20] Then he took the calf which they had made, burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder; and he scattered it on the water and made the children of Israel drink it.
1. In the beginning stages of idolatry, no one worships the idol or image itself a. The idol simply served two purposes: 1) To localize the god it represents 2) To visualize the god it represents b. It is simply designed to make it easier to worship the god represented by the idol 2. Inevitably, however, people will wind up worshipping the idol or image itself a. We see this in various forms of Catholicism b. Where the leaders say the image is not an idol, only an "icon" c. But who can deny that the average worshipper begins to view the image itself as something "holy" and to be "revered"? d. Thus that which is "created" begins receiving adoration rightfully due the "Creator" 3. According to Ro 1:19-23 , the basic error of idol worship is the worship of the "created thing" rather than the "Creator of all things"! B. CONCERNING IDOLATRY AS THAT WHICH DISPLACES GOD... 1. Idolatry is not just the adoration or worship of images 2. Paul defines "covetousness" as idolatry - Ep 5:5; Co 3:5 a. Any strong desire for material things that replaces our desire for God is a form of idolatry! 1) Our hearts are such that they are drawn to whatever is our treasure - Mt 6:21 2) If our treasure is earthly things, our heart (devotion) is drawn away from God 3) We cannot serve material things and God at the same time! - Mt 6:24 b. Thus we can be idolaters when we make things other than God Himself our priority in life, such as: 1) Our job 2) Our house 3) Our family 4) Our hobby CONCERNING IDOLATRY AS COMMONLY CONSIDERED...
CONCERNING IDOLATRY AS COMMONLY CONSIDERED...
CONCERNING FORNICATION... Numbers 25:1-9 (NKJV) Now Israel remained in Acacia Grove, and the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab. [2] They invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. [3] So Israel was joined to Baal of Peor, and the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel. [4] Then the Lord said to Moses, "Take all the leaders of the people and hang the offenders before the Lord, out in the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel." [5] So Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Every one of you kill his men who were joined to Baal of Peor." [6] And indeed, one of the children of Israel came and presented to his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. [7] Now when Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand; [8] and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stopped among the children of Israel. [9] And those who died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.
CONCERNING TEMPTING CHRIST Numbers 21:5 (NKJV) And the people spoke against God and against Moses: "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread." Numbers 21:4-9 (NKJV) Then they journeyed from Mount Hor by the Way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became very discouraged on the way. [5] And the people spoke against God and against Moses: "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread." [6] So the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died. [7] Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, "We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord that He take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people. [8] Then the Lord said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live." [9] So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.
Because of their dissatisfaction with God’s dealings with them – Israel complained, and did so often – Numbers 14:1-4; 16:1-48, (41) God destroyed them – Num 16:21-35,45-48 The Corinthians could be guilty of the sin of murmuring due to the instructions given them Regarding: Division (1-3), church discipline (5), internal lawsuits & behavior (6) MDR (7) association with idolatrous practices forbidden (8,9) Certainly we would never have a problem with complaining . . . Do not grumble against one another – James 5:9 (NKJV) Do not grumble against one another, brethren, lest you be condemned. Behold, the Judge is standing at the door! Being hospitable to one another – 1 Peter 4:9 (NKJV) Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. Do all things without complaining – Philip. 2:14 (NKJV) Do all things without complaining and disputing, Contentment with God’s dealings with us and our love for Him and one another will prevent the sin of grumbling – murmuring & complaining - Philip. 4:11-12 (NKJV) Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: [12] I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 1 Tim. 6:6-8 (NKJV) Now godliness with contentment is great gain. [7] For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. [8] And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. Hebrews 13:5-6 (NKJV) Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." [6] So we may boldly say: "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?" CONCERNING COMPLAINING 1 Cor. 10:10 (NKJV) nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. Numbers 14:1-4 (NKJV) So all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night. [2] And all the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, "If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this wilderness! [3] Why has the Lord brought us to this land to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should become victims? Would it not be better for us to return to Egypt?" [4] So they said to one another, "Let us select a leader and return to Egypt." Numbers 16:1-3 (NKJV) Now Korah the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, and On the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men; [2] and they rose up before Moses with some of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty leaders of the congregation, representatives of the congregation, men of renown. [3] They gathered together against Moses and Aaron, and said to them, "You take too much upon yourselves, for all the congregation is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the Lord?" Numbers 16:11 (NKJV) Therefore you and all your company are gathered together against the Lord. And what is Aaron that you complain against him?" Numbers 16:31-32 (NKJV) Now it came to pass, as he finished speaking all these words, that the ground split apart under them, [32] and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and all the men with Korah, with all their goods. Numbers 16:41 (NKJV) On the next day all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron, saying, "You have killed the people of the Lord."
