The Saeima is composed of 100 representatives of the people – members of the parliament. • History The Saeima has been the name of the parliament of the Republic of Latvia since 1922. The word Saeima means an “assembly” derived from the verb “to go”. The original meaning of the neologism saims, coined by Juris Alunāns, is a “national council, state council”. The word used subsequently – saeima – has the broader meaning of “an assembly, a meeting, a conference”.Prepared by: Public Relations DepartmentJēkaba iela 11, Rīga, LV-1811 • Phone: 6708 7321 • E-mail: info@saeima.lv
