Case Study The Management Innovation eXchange (MIX) Industry Management Consulting The MIX Uses Saba People Cloud to Create a Unique Global Community Working to Reinvent Management Challenge Develop a pioneering approach to largescale problem-solving to harness innovative management ideas and the principles of the Web to help build organizations fit for the 21st century Benefits ƒƒ Supports a uniquely collaborative, enterprise social networking environment that brings together more than 900 thought leaders and people from all types of businesses worldwide ƒƒ Provides the foundation for a transformative workplace that relies on exceptionally rich pages to foster highly engaging and collaborative interactions ƒƒ Supports real-time exchanges and informationsharing when desired through live chat and internet audio or HD video web conferencing and webinars ƒƒ Offers multi-level security for targeted sharing of information or interactions within groups or among specific individuals ƒƒ Cloud based solution allowsfor rapid deployment, reduces the burden on internal staff, and eliminates capital expenditures on servers and related equipment. Solutions ƒƒ SabaPeople Cloud Many organizations today are bureaucratic, inefficient and politicized. Being creative or sometimes just productive can be a challenge. The MIX represents a groundbreaking effort to leverage the expertise and insights of a global community to reinvent management for a new age. Rather than having people struggle in isolation to develop new management approaches, the MIX provides a collaborative environment that brings together thought leaders and in-the-trenches innovators to share ideas and experiences — and in the process, gain valuable insights that can be applied in any organization. The MIX is the brainchild of Gary P. Hamel, Ph.D., whom the Wall Street Journal has labeled the world’s most influential business thinker, and Fortune magazine called “the world’s leading expert on business strategy.” Originally, the MIX was primarily facilitated by a traditional web presence with incentives such as The Harvard Business Review/McKinsey M-Prize for Management Innovation for the best contributions. Saba People Cloud provides “ a groundbreaking social collaboration and ‘ideation’ platform that allows MIX members from around the world to work together to innovate, explore and develop ideas to build organizations that are fit for ” the future. Dr. Gary P. Hamel Visiting Professor of Strategic and International Management London Business School Founder of the MIX But Dr. Hamel recognized that to be truly transformational, the MIX needed more than just prizes for innovative ideas — it needed a way to encourage the most farflung collaboration from broadest cross-section of business people. As the keynote speaker at Saba’s People 2010 Global Summit in Boston, Dr. Hamel found what he was looking for: Saba People Cloud. “My vision was to use the principles we see on the Web today – openness, transparency, meritocracy - to bring thought leaders and business people together like never before to fundamentally transform management for the 21st century,” Dr. Hamel said. “Saba People Cloud provides a full social collaboration and ‘ideation’ platform that allows MIX members from around the world to work together to innovate, explore and develop ideas to build organizations that are fit for the future. The Enterprise Social functionality of the Saba People Cloud
  • 2. Case Study n The Management Innovation eXchange (MIX) enables a community that is passionate about the future of management to share ideas transparently, tap into the collective intelligence of the world. Asynchronous collaboration in social discussions enables people in different time zones to contribute ideas and work together on “management hacks”, while the powerful synchronous tools like real-time HD video meetings and webinars provide face-to-face interaction.” Saba People Cloud provided a flexible set of tools to support the effort — creating a highly connected community to enable rapid innovation through the sharing of knowledge and experience from a diverse set of viewpoints. The Saba solution allowed MIX members to avoid limitations created by time differences and work asynchronously as much as possible with the help of discussion forums, a vibrant workspace for idea exchange, micro-blogging, rating and ranking of contributor input, and expert location — reserving chat as well as real-time audio and HD video web conferencing for tasks that required it. “We purposely configured the interface primarily to highlight discussion forums at the start,” explained Chris Grams, who is a guide with the MIX and a partner with New Kind, a company involved in strategy, design, branding, and communications. “As our work proceeded, we took advantage of more of the functionality that Saba People Cloud provides. In effect, we used the available configuration features in the Saba People Cloud to progressively disclose features that enhanced the user experience during the appropriate stages of the hackathon, matching the tools to the activities in the community.” Enabling a Management “Hackathon” In the technology world, a hackathon is a highly intense, coordinated effort to write an enormous amount of software code in a very short time period. With the help of Saba People Cloud, the MIX launched the world’s first social management hackathon to collaborate on “Communities of Passion” in March 2011. “Our goal was to develop a solid set of management hacks — our own source code — that could be used by anyone to eliminate obstacles or implement exciting new processes within their organizations,” said Michele Zanini of the MIX. Approximately 60 contributors representing a variety of organizations participated in the first MIX hackathon. The sixmonth effort addressed key goals and objectives such as: ƒƒ Defining the essential elements of communities of passion ƒƒ Identifying the most critical barriers to success ƒƒ Collaboratively developing mini-hacks into fully articulated programs ƒƒ Reporting on and learning more about the group’s accomplishments The MIX’s Communities of Passion undertaking was highly successful, identifying a number of practical ideas that ranged from grand in scale or ambition to deceptively small tweaks — each with the potential to reinvent management and make organizations more efficient and productive. “ Saba People Cloud is incredibly intuitive. Its rich functionality has allowed MIX members to interact however they like without giving the tools much thought ” — so nothing got in the way of the collaboration. Michele Zanini Co-Founder of the Mix
  • 3. “Saba People Cloud is incredibly intuitive,” Zanini remarked. “Its rich functionality has allowed MIX members to interact however they like without giving the tools much thought — so nothing got in the way of the collaboration.” Selecting the Saba People Cloud In addition to Saba’s intuitive design, the MIX appreciated that it could obtain Saba People Cloud as a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution, eliminating the cost and time constraints of hosting their own hardware technology infrastructure, enabled the MIX to launch the online community faster. The group also valued the Saba People Cloud capability to apply multi-level security so information-sharing can be targeted to specific groups, as well as the solution’s ability to use powerful analytics to measure community activity and engagement. Innovation and Invention on a Global Scale The latest effort from the MIX has advanced the concept by an order of magnitude. The Management 2.0 hackathon was launched in November 2011 in partnership with Saba and the Enterprise 2.0 Conference. It grew into a large-scale collaboration project exploring ways in which the principles of Web 2.0 can serve as inspiration for transforming how all organizations will be run and managed over the next decade. The project attracted more than 900 participants from around the globe to tap an unprecedented amount of collective intelligence to brainstorm and build out low-risk, high-impact ideas for rapid, yet prudent, experimentation. Management 2.0 was led by a prestigious list of guides and coaches, including Dr. Hamel, Zanini, Grams, and others from the MIX; the Community Roundtable; the Dachis Group; Dell; Gartner Group; McKinsey; MIT; Saba; and more. The group’s efforts were once again supported in large part by Saba People Cloud’s asynchronous tools such as its unique workspaces capability, which takes the concept of a wiki to a whole new level. The workspace allows users to create and collaborate around rich “pages” — including images, annotated diagrams and even embedded videos — while giving the MIX full control over who can or cannot create or edit pages in different sections of the project workspace. The guides and coaches oversaw the hackathon on a daily basis — providing updates, introducing new activities and ensuring the experience was engaging and fruitful for all involved. Saba’s real-time webinars and Web conferencing capabilities were ideal for flesh out the ideas and inventions as MIX members charted the path forward toward Management 2.0 goals and objectives. “The hackathon community, like most large organizations, consisted of a globally dispersed team of collaborators in different time zones that made it virtually impossible to communicate effectively with just email or voice communications, “ Dr. Hamel noted. “Using a social software platform that supported collaboration activities including rapid ideation made our hackathon more efficient, and we were able to concentrate on the hacks instead of the technology.” “ Our hackathon community, like most large organizations, consisted of a globally dispersed team of collaborators in different time zones that made it virtually impossible to communicate effectively with just email or voice communications. Using a social software platform that supported collaboration activities made our hackathon more efficient, and we were able to concentrate on the ” hacks instead of the technology. Dr. Gary P.
