Issues private sector face in dealingwith Smallholder Farmers• Difficulty in mobilising and working with individualsmallholder farmers,• Difficulty in providing capital investment and extensionservices due to lack of trust and poor farmer organisation,• Small and unreliable volumes of agricultural producewhich are predominantly low quality,• The perception that large private companies maygenerally exploit smallholder farmers,• The inefficiency of having to engage with numerousdifferent individuals, collect inputs from numerouslocations and make multiple small payments

Role of an NGO• Mobilising smallholder farmers in to functional groups(farmers clubs, associations and cooperatives) with clearobjectives, rules and regulations,• Building capacity of smallholder farmers in different areasincluding organisational development and group dynamics,business management and enterprise development, groupwarehouse management and marketing,• Improving extension service delivery and building capacity ofsmallholder farmers in different technical areas of agricultureproduction to improve the quality and quantity of produce,• Building strong and mutual links between smallholderfarmers and different stakeholders including private sector,

Value of NGO Involvement• Ability to raise complementary resources,• Build trust between the smallholder farmers andprivate sector partners – ethical issues,• Raising awareness among smallholder farmers of theneed to provide a specified quantity and qualityof produce,• Farmers adherence to agreed terms andconditions, efficient and effective managementof marketing, warehousing and selling ofproduce,• Helps private sector partners to concentrate ontheir core function of processing agricultural rawmaterials into finished products for market.
