Recently, more and more data and services are moving to the cloud, that has important implications for data management. This trend indicates that information systems are becoming more centralized, the size of data in the cloud grows thus there will be less need for exchanging data, one will rather exchange references to data items. In such settings, the access control, privacy, and provenance questions are becoming essential. Moreover, the data items will have more direct economic utility, as the storage, energy, and computational costs can be directly put in relation to money. In this vision data semantics also closely linked to economic utility: data items which one can interpret (beyond system limits), interlink and process automatically have certainly higher economic utility. PlanetData's role is to demonstrate useful ways of exposing data to foster the adoption of semantic technologies in the European Community.

The Data Provisioning and Management presentation was presented by Zoltán Miklós (Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne) at the PlanetData project Kick-off Meeting on October 11, 2010 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

Data Provisioning and Management

  1. 1. PlanetDataData provisioning and management Zoltán Miklós EPFL
  2. 2. Data moves to the cloud• Economic rationality implies the use of cloud services for storing large-scale data• This implies that the information systems are becoming less and less decentralized …• … while the size of the data in the cloud increases – Together with its degree of heterogeneity
  3. 3. Data management issues• Exchange of references instead of data – Data is stored in the cloud thus no need to send it – Access rights and privacy, provenance – Quality assessment• Competition for energy/money – Data production rate is higher as the decrease of storage costs (esp. for streaming data) – Data items with more direct economic utility
  4. 4. Economic utility and semantics• When has a data item high utility? If one can – Interpret (beyond system limits) – Understand, process automatically – Link the data item to various other items in other data sources – Have access (privacy) based on the content (owner)• Semantics is a key factor to increase economic utility of data items
  5. 5. PlanetData• Help the members and a community of related organizations to expose their data in a useful way – Demonstrate the utility!• Help the European Community to adopt semantic technologies in this process as this could bring direct economic benefits
  6. 6. Thank you!
