  2. 2. Why take the time? n  Preparing an effective nomination is the key to presenting the accomplishments of a candidate to the award committee n  SPE Awards are very competitive! Award committees review many excellent candidates. n  International committees may not know your candidate. n  You must communicate to the committee using the nomination. Writing is important!

Why is writing important? •  Award committees rely on concise and complete nominations •  Well written nominations allow committee members to use their time effectively •  Poorly prepared nominations will not highlight the technical or service accomplishments of your candidate •  You must communicate effectively to give your candidate a good chance
  4. 4. Keys to a Good Nomination n  A best practices document is available to assist members in creating a good nomination. Key points are: •  Start early n  The call for nominations begins in November •  Research the criteria and candidate •  Write a well documented argument •  Complete nomination form •  Request 3 endorsements (international only) •  Submit by the deadline

Review Award Criteria SPE Award criteria can be found online at SPE.org/speawards n  Awards fall into 3 categories •  Membership Designations n  Honorary and Distinguished Membership •  Professional & Service Awards n  Service to SPE and to the public •  Technical Awards n  Based on SPE technical disciplines and sub disciplines
  6. 6. Select the appropriate award n  Global or regional? n  Technical or service? n  Technical discipline and sub discipline? n  Current professional member of SPE? n  Age?
  7. 7. Who is not eligible? n  You cannot nominate yourself n  SPE Board of Directors n  Award Committee Members (nominated award only) •  Current and for 2 years after service n  Honorary Members n  Members ordinarily resident in countries sanctioned by the US and EU n  Student Members

Complete a nomination form n  Nomination are made online at www.spe.org/awards/nominate/ n  You must log in using your SPE email address and password •  Use the Login help link or contact SPE Customer Service at service@spe.orgif you do not know your login information n  Find your candidate •  Search using candidate’s full name or email address n  Enter all required information on form n  You must check out to complete the nomination

Provide Justification n  Write a concise one sentence statement explaining why the candidate should receive the award(required) n  Provide specific examples of the candidate’s work that support the award criteria(required) •  Justification must include specific examples that support the award requirements •  This is your opportunity to communicate the best qualifications of your candidate to the judges
  10. 10. Provide Documentation (For international awards only) n  Professional history n  Education n  Job experience n  Company affiliations n  Licenses and certifications n  Organization membership
  11. 11. Optional Documentation (For international awards only) n  Major Accomplishments n  Worldwide n  Local n  Company n  Academic n  Public Service n  a list of the 5 publications that represents the candidate’s best work

Solicit Support (For international awards only) n  Three colleagues familiar with the candidate’s work can send letters in support of the nomination. n  Letters should contain specific examples that support the award requirements n  Colleagues should send letters of support directly to SPE at awards@spe.org n  Letters are highly recommended, but not required.

Nominations are confidential n  All SPE Award nomination materials are confidential n  SPE staff can only provide the name of the candidate, the nominator, and the award n  Members cannot review nomination forms or support letters they did not provide n  Candidates cannot review to the nomination
  14. 14. Meet the Deadline The call for nominations begins in November All SPE award nominations and letters of support must be received by February 15 Regional Directors may extend their regional award deadline

Regional Winners n  Regional technical and service award winners become candidates for international awards in the following year n  Regional nominators should use the same level of documentation required for international awards n  Letters of recommendation may be submitted for international consideration n  International award selection committees may choose not to review incomplete or inadequate nominations
