Teachers who already hold a teaching credential can earn their Teacher Librarian Services Credential by completing the NCATE-accredited coursework in the fully online Teacher Librarian program at the San Jose State University (SJSU) School of Information.

Please check with your home state's requirements to ensure the the Teacher Librarian coursework at the SJSU iSchool is accepted in your state for the Teacher Librarian services credential.

The specialized coursework within the exclusively online Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program at the San José State University School of Information will prepare you for a rewarding career as a Teacher Librarian. Teacher Librarianship Coursework in our exclusively online Teacher Librarian program focuses on the skills you will need for professional employment in K-12 school libraries, including collaboration, instructional strategies in information literacy and digital literacy, school leadership, and program administration. Upon program completion, students who already hold a valid Clear Professional Teaching Credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) will be eligible to apply for their Teacher Librarian Services Credential in California. If you are interested in a Teacher Librarian Services Credential from a state other than California, please contact your home state’s Department of Education before undertaking this program. Expand Your Career Options Teacher Librarianship is one of the career pathways you can follow in our nationally ranked Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program. Teacher Librarian program students who choose to earn an MLIS degree complete three more electives and the MLIS culminating experience (e-portfolio or thesis), in addition to the required coursework for the Teacher Librarian Services Credential. While not required, Teacher Librarian program students are encouraged to complete the additional elective courses and reap the benefits of the emerging career opportunities for information professionals who hold an MLIS degree.   2. 2. Applying to the Teacher Librarian Program Teacher Librarian program applicants follow the same application process as our school’s MLIS applicants. Once admitted, new students self-enroll in the Teacher Librarian program. Please visit our website for more information: ischool.sjsu.edu/tl-admissions Tuition There are two types of fee structures at our school. Our Regular Session students live near the San José State University campus (zip codes 936xx-958xx), and their tuition is established by the California State University system. Our Special Session students live anywhere in the world, except the San José, California catchment area. Special Session tuition is $474 per unit. Fees are subject to review and change. Details about tuition for Regular Session students can be found on our website at: ischool.sjsu.edu/fees Accreditation Our Teacher Librarian program is approved by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and meets the requirements for the California Teacher Librarian Services Credential. Our MLIS program is fully accredited by the American Library Association (ALA), and has been continuously accredited by ALA since 1969. In addition, San José State University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
