  • 2. The United States of America 1845 - 1848
  • 3. Annexation of Texas
    • The US shows its interest in acquiring land from Mexico, which would later be the 28th state of Texas, in order to forward its expansion efforts.
    • 4. It was at the request of the Mexican government that Anglo-American begin to preoccupy the northern portion of Mexico. The huge population of Anglo in the northern portion of Mexico led to a disillusionment of Mexican rule.
    • 5. Mexico threatened war with the US if it annexed Texas.
  • Mexican-American War 1846 - 1848
    • Mexico refused to acknowledge the treaty of 1836.
    • 6. Mexico states they will declare war on the US to re-acquire Texas; a rebellious state.
    • 7. “Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon American soil.”
    -Thornton Affair
    • May 13, 1846 – US Congress declared war.
  • The Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 was an intricate package of five bills, passed in September 1850, defusing a four year confrontation between the slave states of the South and the free states of the North that arose from expectation of territorial expansion of the United States with the Texas Annexation and the following Mexican-American War.
