Project Rationale Increasing number, frequency, intensity and geographical spread of hydro-meteorological hazards High vulnerability of mountain communities Remote terrain and scattered communities Undermine lives and livelihoods of mountain communities short-term and long-term impacts already discernible Processes of climate change and variability adding new dimension to HVR profile of the region
  • 4. Specific Objective of the PROJECT To Reduce the Risks faced by Mountain To Develop Communities and Implement Comprehensive Risk Management Strategies In the Himalayan To Mitigate Impacts of Region Hydro-meteorological/ Climatic Hazards
  • 5. Overall objective Assess impacts of hydro-met hazards on mountain communities and socio-economic infrastructure Develop, identify and implement feasible risk mitigation measures at community level Facilitate knowledge networking and information sharing on issues related to climate risk management Demonstrate an approach for integrating climate risk management into on-going national DRM initiatives
  • 6. Project Strategy Focus on all climate-induced mountain hazards and risks Adopt a more integrated climate risk management approach Adopt a multi stake holder’s approach Pro-active DRR as an effective tool for climate-induced risk mitigation
  • 7. Project outputs Outputs – i. assess risks and impacts of hydro-met hazards ii. Identify and implement community-based risk reduction and preparedness measures iii. Knowledge networking and coordination for climate risk management and inform the process of policy formulation
  • 8. Approaches, Methodologies and activities Output 1: i. data-base of hydro-met hazards ii. Prepare HVR assessment reports iii. Compile an inventory of glacial lakes using GIS platform
  • 9. Outputs and activities Output 2: i. local level risk reduction and preparedness ii. Community-based early warning system iii. Training and capacity building
  • 10. Outputs and activities Output 3: i. knowledge networking and coordination ii. E-discussion on ‘Promoting DRR as a tool for climate risk management’ iii. Support the process of formulation of strategies and frameworks for addressing climatic hazards
