Manufacture for a number of the supermarkets and high street stores such as The Body Shop
When talking about sustainable procurement we are of course talking about the 3 pillars of sustainability All need to be addressed Supplier approval process will address each of these
Approvals – looking at T&C’s , lead times, accreditations etc Supplier Agreements – preferred suppliers who share our ethos. Will get more of our business leading to better prices Vendor rating – monthly monitoring of delivery and quality performance.
Reviewing what we have done so far for this presentation was encouraging as it reinforces that although there is a long way to go we have made a good start Local business partners – will talk about local suppliers later but WPL project is a partnership where they provide the kit and expertise on our site – securing us significant savings whilst being able to concentrate on core business.
Palm oil – growing pressure to ensure it comes from Green Palm sources – reformulating would just move the issue to coconut oil instead. Community trade – thought of as being for overseas suppliers PCR is gaining momentum Materials that used to be derived from petrochemicals have nearly all switch to palm oil thereby increasing the pressures on forests Done without having to separate the supply chains – every tonne of sustainable oil generates a certificate that can then be purchased by consumers wishing to support the sustainable oils. The oil you physically buy may not be from sustainable sources. Costs approx 10$ per tonne of glycerine plus a $500 dollar membership fee (250tonnes glycerine used per year) Actual certificates are approx $1 per tonne of crude oil We are not yet involved in this – if all of Europe bought only certified palm oil it would only account for 10% of world demand. As yet no suppliers are offering certified palm oil derived materials. GreenPalm is a certificate trading programme which is designed to tackle the environmental and social problems created by the production of palm oil. Exclusively endorsed by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), the GreenPalm programme is based on the principle that the best way to encourage people to work in a sustainable and responsible way is to reward them for doing so
We have to ensure that the orders we place or lead times we ask for do not put undue stress on suppliers causing them to breach working regulations i.e. working time directive, unpaid overtime etc.
