http://www.sap.com/insight-and-me - Business-built BI applications are agile – but often lack the robustness and scalability of enterprise BI applications. IT-optimized enterprise BI applications, on the other hand, don’t always have the flexibility required for today’s markets. That’s why Forrester Consulting recommends merging business-built and IT-optimized applications for BI that’s agile, scalable, and self-service.

It was a question about agile business intelligence (BI) that Forrester Consulting put to the test in a commissioned study con- ducted on behalf of SAP. The study asked 368 business and IT decision makers across industries and around the world to better understand the agility of their BI applications and environment. 52% report that it’s not easy to find information. 50% find that getting answers to business questions is also not easy. 45% can’t get all of the data they need from enter- prise BI applications. IT-optimized enterprise BI applications are robust and scalable – but must also be agile. Enterprise BI applications deliver strong data reliability and governance, business alignment, and scalability. However, they don’t always have the flexibility required for today’s markets. Getting the information you need is often difficult. And BI requests often take too long. Only 18%of BI support requests are handled in minutes. 47%are completed in hours. 31%wait days or weeks. Homegrown, desktop-bound applications can’t handle the data volumes. And reliance on these applications creates information silos across the company. 76%are still using spreadsheets and other homegrown BI applications, which likely is why survey respondents also report that 45%of business data resides outside of enterprise BI environments. Business-built BI applications are agile – but must also be robust and scalable. These “homegrown” applications are often more agile and responsive than enterprise BI applications. However, they often lack some key advantages of enterprise BI applications.
