Terminology

Afaria server – Afaria is a server-based solution that can operate as a single, standalone server or as
multiple servers in a server farm environment.
Afaria server farm – multiple Afaria servers operating together in an Afaria installation.
Afaria database server – the database server contains your Afaria database
Relay Server (RS) – a secure, load-balanced proxy server that relays communication between mobile
devices and one or more Sybase server-based products
Relay Server Outbound Enabler (RSOE) – its primary function is to initiate an outbound connection to all
relay servers in the relay server farm on behalf of the backend server.
Enrollment Server – required for handheld device enrollment and iOS operations
Self-Service Portal Server (EUSSP or SSP) – lets end users enroll their device in Afaria management,
and lets users view their device information and issue commands
Package server – serves Afaria application packages to devices

The following factors can affect session duration:

•  Device response time

•  Number of device configuration policies (and settings within policies)

•  Connection speed

•  Number of requests per second that the IIS server can process


Calculating Concurrency

Number of connections per day per device

•  Client initiated

•  Server schedules

Duration of connections
•  When will devices connect

Time zone considerations

Requirements for “emergency” updates

•  Procedure and number of clients


Server Scaling

Performance is bound by number of concurrent connections

•  Good rule of thumb is to assume 10% concurrency
•  Afaria server can handle 200 – 350 concurrent connections
•  iOS provisioning server can handle 200 – 500 connections

•  Corner cases must be considered
•  Initial provisioning can increase peak concurrency
•  Emergency or unexpected scenarios will also include peak
concurrency

Afaria Ports – Detail

Ports that need to be opened
u  80, 81, and 443 from Afaria to Relay Server outbound
u  80 and 443, from Public Internet to Relay Server inbound

Ports for iOS
u  2195 and 2196, and 5223 (5223 is used for Wi-Fi (only) devices) from Afaria server to Apple and from Devices
to Internet (in case of Wi-Fi only devices to work within Corporate Wi-Fi) at gateway.push.apple.com and
feedback.push.apple.com.
u  These ports should be opened to the entire address block range as following, Outbound

Ports for Android
u  Port 5228 to be opened outbound from Afaria server to: https://android.apis.google.com/c2dm/send
u  Opening OUTBOUND to IP block 74.0.0.0/8.
u  Port 5228 will also need to be opened outbound from any Wi-Fi network that a (particularly Wi-Fi only) device
will use, either corporate or guest Wi-Fi network(s).
Other
u  Afaria Administrator port 7982 – listening port for API service calls from the optional Afaria Self-Service Portal.
u  Afaria Server port 135 – DCOM calling port for DCE/RPC
u  Afaria Server ports 8085, 8086, 8087 – the server listens for incoming requests from other Afaria server
components for Afaria outbound notification services to devices.
