Lesson 1 reading Lesson 1 reading Presentation Transcript

  • Lesson 1 Reading Practice for Первый Круг Russian Full Circle by Donna Oliver and Edie Furniss Copyright © 2013 by Yale University. All rights reserved.
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения Each lesson has a reading “lab” exercise similar to this one. The goal of these exercises is to help you learn both to read the Cyrillic alphabet with ease and to infer meaning through transliteration and applying grammar you’ve studied so far. Go through each of the slides and answer the questions. You should be able to understand most of them simply by transliterating the words.
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 1 • Where are we?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 2 • «Вкус сезона» means “taste of the season.” What’s the taste of the season and where can we find it?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 3 • This is the “Sauces” section of the take-out menu from Ёлки-Палки, a popular restaurant chain in Russia. You should be able to identify three familiar sauces without a dictionary. • If you’re feeling ambitious, use a dictionary to decipher others.
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 4 • What can you buy in this store?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 5 • What’s in this container? • What do you think it’s used for?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 6 • What business is this?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 7 • This is a sign for a café. What do you think it specializes in?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 8 This kiosk promises by its very name to get your food to you quickly. • What’s it called? • What word in the second line tells you what you can get there?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 9 “Осторожно!” means “Be careful!” or “Watch out!” • What should you watch out for here?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 10 • What are these businesses and what do they offer?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 11 This image and the next are from the drinks section of a menu. • Three of the beverages on this page are probably familiar to you. Can you name them? • Though you might not know the last brand here, Клаустайлер, what can you infer from the information given? • The word for beer in Russian is пиво. What do the words under the names mean (consult a dictionary) and how can we explain the endings?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 12 The menu also offers other kinds of drinks. • What do you recognize here? (you should be able to figure out six of them —if you know that лет in this context means “years”)
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 13 • What’s this man’s shirt advertising?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 14 • Name a least one thing you can get here besides tattoos.
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 15 • This is a poster from the museum and park at Tsaritsyno, located in the southern part of Moscow. What’s being advertised here?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 16 • What can you buy in this store? • What do you think the store is called (hint: it’s not Цветы подарки)?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 17 This is a poster for the International Stanislavsky Festival. • What two plays are being advertised (and who are the authors)? • In what month are these plays being shown?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 18 What’s in this building? •
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 19 • What kind of business is this? • What can you get there? • Where’s the original “Temple Bar”? What kind of bar would that make this?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 20 This trolleybus-café stands on the old Arbat, one of Moscow’s most famous streets. It’s named after a song by one of the Arbat’s most famous residents, the bard-poet Bulat Okudzhava. A monument to Okudzhava can be found on the street as well (and people like to get their pictures taken next to it). Watch the video of the song here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuwNqu8XM4k • What’s an alternate title of the song?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 21 • -ик is a common diminutive added to nouns, sort of like adding “little” before the noun. What kind of kiosk is this?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 22 • What’s the name of this aspiring politician? • What does he hope to be?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 23 This is a political poster that came out during elections a few years ago. • What’s being asked here?
  • Урок 1: Практика чтения No. 24 • What kind of food do you think you can get here? • What dish is the restaurant’s name usually associated with?
