Creating and Attaching your Research Plan <ul><li>NIH requirements: Research Plan in 16 separate PDF files </li></ul><ul><li>Using Cayuse tools, you can: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Create a properly-formatted Research Plan in one Word document </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Create one properly-formatted (fonts/margins), properly bookmarked PDF file from your Word document </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>One bookmark per section of your Research Plan </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Upload the single PDF file to your SF424 form, and let Cayuse424 divide it into sections and attach each part where it belongs </li></ul></ul>

Windows: The Process, in a Nutshell <ul><li>Using a word template supplied by Cayuse, start from scratch to create the word document (Research Plan) </li></ul><ul><li>or Convert your existing Word Research Plan to the Cayuse format, using a Word “add-in” supplied by Cayuse </li></ul><ul><li>2. Complete your Research Plan and save it </li></ul><ul><li>3. From Word, send your document to the Cayuse PDF Printer to generate a bookmarked PDF with no headers and footers </li></ul><ul><li>4. Upload and attach your bookmarked PDF file to Cayuse424 </li></ul>

To Configure the Cayuse PDF Printer <ul><li>(Windows only) </li></ul><ul><li>Control Panel:Printers & Faxes </li></ul><ul><li>Right click on the Cayuse PDF Printer </li></ul><ul><li>Choose “Printing Preferences” </li></ul><ul><li>On the Advanced Options tab: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Check “Multi-language support” to enable Greek Characters </li></ul></ul>

Creating a New Research Plan Document (1) <ul><li>To begin: </li></ul><ul><li>Open Word </li></ul><ul><li>File | New… </li></ul><ul><li>On the task pane, click on Templates on my computer or General Templates </li></ul><ul><li>When the dialog appears, click on the Cayuse tab </li></ul><ul><li>Choose ResearchPlan1_1.dot and click “OK” </li></ul>
  11. 11. Creating a New Research Plan Document (1) – Cont’d <ul><li>6. In the dialog box that appears, answer some questions to determine the appropriate section headings and formatting for your Research Plan – being very careful about Human and Animal research components </li></ul>

Creating a New Research Plan Document (2) <ul><li>Reconfigure your Document by pressing the Reconfigure Info button . </li></ul><ul><li>Complete the screen carefully, as this will determine the proper outline of your proposal. </li></ul>If you didn’t immediately see questions about section headings:
  13. 13. <ul><li>If a Macros Security dialog appears, allow the macros to run. </li></ul><ul><li>New Cayuse Toolbar buttons appear. </li></ul><ul><li>These buttons allow you to preview the document in both paper and electronic-ready formats. </li></ul>Creating a New Research Plan Document (3) Windows: Mac OS X:

Creating A New Research Plan Document (4) <ul><li>If the Cayuse toolbar does not appear, then manually attach the template: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Go to the “Tools” menu </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Choose “Templates and Add-Ins” </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Click “Attach” and select from the Cayuse folder: ResearchPlan1_1.dot </li></ul>

Creating A New Research Plan Document (5) <ul><li>To display the Outline of the research plan, click the “Display Outline” button </li></ul><ul><ul><li>This shows all the possible section headings </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>You can copy and paste from this Window into your document, if you need to add a section heading </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Otherwise, this is for your reference only </li></ul></ul>

Creating A New Research Plan Document (7) <ul><li>Scroll through and note the page breaks </li></ul><ul><ul><li>If you add page breaks manually, you may have extras! </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The section header style is “GSSectHead” </li></ul><ul><ul><li>This causes a page break before the header </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Signals the Cayuse PDF Printer to insert a PDF bookmark </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Bookmarks allow the Cayuse424 Web tools to separate and attach the components of your Research Plan </li></ul></ul></ul>
  18. 18. Generating a PDF <ul><li>Save the word document </li></ul><ul><li>Click “PDF for Esub” – which prompts you for a destination folder for the PDF of the Research Plan </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Note: PDF is an Esubmission requirement </li></ul></ul>
  19. 19. Generating a PDF (2) <ul><li>The Cayuse PDF Printer creates a PDF of your Research Plan and tells you where to find it </li></ul><ul><li>Check the PDF to verify that it appears as you expected </li></ul>
  20. 20. What’s different for Mac OS X? <ul><li>When starting your Research Plan from scratch: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>You must use “File | Project Gallery…” and select the “ResearchPlan1_1.dot” template </li></ul></ul>

Generating a PDF on OS X <ul><li>In Microsoft Word: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Click “Preview PDF” </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>From the “File” menu, choose “Print” </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Choose “PDF”, and then the “Save as PDF” option, and then a destination for the file </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Exit Microsoft Word </li></ul><ul><li>Once you have your PDF, you must add the bookmarks using the AddBookmarks.jar utility </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Click on AddBookmarks.jar </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>With the dialog box, navigate to select your PDF </li></ul></ul>

Generating a PDF on OS X (2) <ul><li>A dialog will appear (be patient) which shows you the bookmarks added to the PDF </li></ul><ul><li>If they are all there, you are ready to attach your PDF to Cayuse424 </li></ul><ul><li>If a bookmark is missing, check your source document and look for problems with the headers (spelling, missing word, etc.) </li></ul><ul><li>Automatically saves a new file: The filename for the bookmarked PDF ends with “_bm” </li></ul>
  23. 23. Converting an Existing Research Plan 1. Open the existing document 2. Tools | Templates and Add-ins 3. Click “Add” 4. Open the Cayuse folder 5. Choose “ResearchPlanAddIn1_1.dot” 6. Click “OK”

Templates for Other Attachments <ul><li>There’s: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>One for a Biosketch </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>One for a Continuation Page </li></ul></ul><ul><li>You can use these Microsoft Word templates if you wish, starting at “File | New…” </li></ul><ul><li>You can use the Cayuse PDF Printer to make a PDF version of any attachment </li></ul>

Things to Watch Out For <ul><li>If you cut and paste from another document into your research plan: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Be careful with page breaks and section headers </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Altered formatting, extra page breaks, or extra headers can cause problems later, when you try to create your PDF </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>If your text contains words like “specific aims” or anything else that also appears in a section heading: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The “search” will find this when you “reconfigure” your document, so be prepared to answer “NO” when you are asked whether those words should be converted into a section heading </li></ul></ul>
