  • 1. How Do I Install My Ethernet Card? ***Warning: Removing the cover of your computer could void your warranty. Please check with your manufacturer, or consult your owner’s manual for details on the warranty information pertaining to your computer before proceeding with the installation procedures.*** The following steps will explain how to install an Ethernet card in your personal computer. Because most Macintosh computers come equipped with built-in Ethernet, Macintosh users most likely will not need to install an Ethernet card. However, if you are a Macintosh user who requires an Ethernet card to be installed or are a PC user who does not have an Ethernet card installed, feel free to call the ResNet office at 323-4948 (32-FIX-IT) and make an appointment to have a consultant come and install one for you. There is a $25 fee, payable only with your Plus Account, to have a ResNet Consultant install an Ethernet card. These are the five general steps to installing your Ethernet card. In the pages to follow you will find a step-by-step method and checklist to complete each of these tasks: Purchase an Ethernet card Install the Ethernet card in your computer Install the drivers for your particular Ethernet card Configure TCP/IP to obtain a DHCP address Configure Internet Explorer if necessary

Purchasing an Ethernet Card for Your PC If you are purchasing an Ethernet card for your notebook computer, you will need to purchase a PCMCIA card, which inserts into a slot on the side of your computer. When purchasing a PCMCIA card, you should consult your computer owner’s manual. If you have PCMCIA expansion slots, they will either be listed as type 1, 2, or 3, and you will need to purchase an Ethernet card according to these specifications. When purchasing an Ethernet card for your desktop computer you will want to make sure to purchase a card that is compatible with your system. Check your owner’s manual to see what type of expansion slots are available. The two types that will generally be found for desktop computers supported on the ResNet network are PCI and ISA. These types of “expansion slots” are known as the expansion bus and allow you to connect various expansion cards to your computer. Below you will find a picture of a typical motherboard. The row of slots on the side of the motherboard is the expansion bus. On newer computers there will usually be a number of PCI slots and a few ISA slots to allow older expansion cards to work in your computer. If you cannot find your owner’s manual to find your computer’s specifications, you can generally identify the type of expansion slot by its color. The PCI expansion slot is white, and the ISA expansion slot is black. This is a typical computer motherboard. This is the part of the computer that controls what it does. It is shown out of its case for a better view. This is the PCI expansion slot, it is white and about 3.5 inches long. This is the ISA expansion slot, it is black and about 5.5 inches long.
  • 3. Installing an Ethernet Card in Your PC This section will cover the installation procedures for installing the Ethernet card you purchased for your desktop PC. After purchasing your Ethernet card, the next task will be to physically install it inside your computer. If you are not comfortable with performing these tasks, feel free to contact the ResNet office at 323-4948 (32-FIX-IT) and set up an appointment to have a ResNet Consultant come and install it for you. Should you choose to do this, there is a $25 fee payable only via your Plus- Account. Below you will find step-by-step directions on how to install the Ethernet card in your expansion slot. Step One: The first step to installing your Ethernet card is to unplug all of the cables from the back of the computer. In doing this, take note of what the cables look like and where they were plugged in, so that you will be able to put them back when you are fin- ished. It is recommended that you write this information down. Step Two: The next step will to be to take the case cover off of the com- puter. If your computer is a newer model it is likely that just one side of the case will come off. If it is slightly older, the whole case may slide off to reveal the inside of the computer. There are normally several screws that hold the cover in place so be sure not to lose them. Your owner’s manual may have more details on how to remove the case from your computer. Step Three: As with any electronic devices there is a RISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK. ResNet Consultants are required to wear an anti-static wrist strap to protect the delicate electronic components inside your computer. We highly recommend that you do the same. Anti-static wrist straps can be purchased at CatsByte, the UK Computer Store. After attaching the wrist strap to your wrist, clip the metal alligator clip to a metal part of the case. Make sure that you do not clip it to any of the electronic components on the inside of the computer, as it may damage them. If you do not have a wrist strap, make sure to touch a metal portion of the case before handling any electronic components
  • 4. such as your Ethernet card. Before you can insert your Ethernet card, you will need to uncover an expansion slot in the back of the computer. After determining the expansion slot that you are going to use, remove the screw from the metal plate covering the expansion slot. Save this screw because it will be used to secure the Ethernet card once it is in the computer. After removing this metal plate you will see an opening in the back of the computer If you were going to use this expansion slot, you would unscrew the screw that is circled. Step Four: Now that you have a space for your card to go in, it is time to insert the card. After unpacking the Ethernet card from all of its anti-static packing, line up the edge of the card that has metal conductors on it with the top of the expansion slot. With your thumbs on the top of the card, gently push the card down and rock it to the left and right until it is completely in the expansion slot. You will know that the card is properly in place when none of the metal conductors on the card are showing above the expansion slot. Secure it to the computer case with the screw that you took out in step three. After it is secure, replace the case cover on the computer with the screws from step two.

Installing an Ethernet Card in Your Notebook PC Step One: Before inserting the PCMCIA Ethernet card that you have purchased into the slot on the side of your notebook computer, turn on the computer and allow it to boot up and start normally. Step Two: Depending on the brand of Ethernet card you purchased, it may have a setup program that you will need to run. If you are unsure, please consult the owner’s manual for your Ethernet card. If you need to run this program it is generally done by inserting the disk or CD-ROM into the floppy drive or CD-ROM tray. After the disk is in your computer, double-click on My Computer and then double-click on the drive that you put the disk in. You should then be able to double-click on the program to run it. The setup program will generally place a series of files on your computer. If it prompts you for a location to place these files, type in the path “C:windowstemp”. Step Three: After running the setup program (if your Ethernet card requires one), insert the Ethernet card you purchased into the slot on the side of your computer. This should be done while your computer is still running. Your Windows based operating system should detect the card and begin to install the drivers for it. While Windows is installing the drivers for your Ethernet card, it may ask you to insert the Windows CD so that it can copy files to your hard disk. If you do not have this CD, the files can often times be found in one of the following locations: C:windows C:windowssystem C:windowssystemprecopy C:windowshelp C:windowsoptionscabs C:windowstemp
  • 6. If you cannot locate your Windows CD, you may also try to have the computer look in the directory where the files from the setup program were placed. An example of this location would be “C:windowstemp”. Unfortunately, ResNet cannot provide sys- tem files of any kind to students. Below you will find a picture of an installed PCMCIA Ethernet card as well as a picture of a Ethernet card being installed into the computer. The first picture shows the card being inserted into the PCMCIA slot after the computer has already been booted, and the second illustrates what the notebook should look like when the card has been properly inserted into the computer. If prompted you will need to reboot your computer.
  • 7. Installing Drivers for Your Ethernet Card Most PCMCIA cards are plug and play compliant. If your computer is also plug and play compliant, then Windows should recognize your Ethernet card and install the necessary drivers to make it function properly. If either your computer or your hardware is not plug and play compli- ant, then you will need to manually install the drivers. After your Ethernet card has been installed, Windows will prompt you for the drivers. At this time you will need to insert the disk or CD that came with your Ethernet card and have Windows search for the drivers on the disk or CD. To complete the process you may need your Windows operating system CD. Each student is responsible for his or her own CD. Due to copyright laws, ResNet cannot distribute or loan students a Win- dows CD, or drivers to complete this task. In some cases, however, the necessary files can be found on the computer by looking in the following locations: C:windows C:windowssystem C:windowssystemprecopy C:windowsoptionscabs C:windowshelp or Your Drivers Disk
