On Aug. 27, Facebook announced changes to its Page Terms that have significantly changed how businesses can manage promotions on the social network. In a nut shell, there is no longer a need for promotions to live in off-site apps.

Check out this POV presentation that our team created, exploring these changes and providing insight on what opportunities are available to brands with a presence on Facebook.

    • 2 Facebook Promotions Policy | Update Facebook announced that it is allowing brands to hold contests and sweeps within the page’s Timeline §  Previously, it required that brands host promotions through apps §  However, promotions still may not be administered on personal Timelines to keep News Feeds from becoming “spammy” §  Pages cannot tag or encourage others to tag themselves in content they are not depicted in (i.e., in photos of a new product in exchange for a chance to win a prize)
    • 3 Facebook Promotions Policy | Update Examples of how businesses may implement promotions: §  Collect entries by having users post on the Page or comment/like a Page post §  Collect entries by having users message the Page §  Utilize likes as a voting mechanism
    • 4 Benefits Brands can take advantage of this opportunity to help: INCREASE PARTICIPATION Promotions launched directly on the brand page can significantly increase success rates as people will be more likely to participate when they are not being led away from the page. EXTEND REACH & ENGAGEMENT Page posts about promotions will be displayed in the News Feeds of those who like the page, broadening the audience reach and overall post engagement. BE SPONTANEOUS A promotion through the brand page is much faster and easier, which can be leveraged for spontaneous promotions. Apps can continue to be used for promotions, which can offer a more personalized experience for the brand based on its business goals.
    • 5 Considerations There are a few things brands should consider before hosting a promotion on Timeline: PERSONAL DATA COLLECTION Hosting promotions on the page limits the amount and ease of data collected from entrants POSSIBLE LIMITED FAN GROWTH Because there would be no way to prevent non-fans from participating, it could limit the amount of fans from liking the page
    • 6 Next Steps Rosetta will continue to keep teams updated on any new developments. With this new policy change, there will be more lessons that develop in the coming weeks on implementation for each specific campaign and audience. It’s important to acknowledge that those promotions that seek to collect private data should still be hosted on apps.
