Travelling by train/ferry to Greece with no Greek when I set out, I found very useful
(learned en route):
(The capital letters indicate the word-stress. ‘po-o’ is, minus the ‘h’, like Santa’s ‘hoho’):
‘paragallO’ - ‘please’; ‘efkharistO’ - ‘thank you’;
‘po-o EEneh -?’ - ‘where is - ?’; (a written name or map or picture is then helpful)
‘thayloh dthomAHtee-oh ya -’ (where ‘th’ is as in ‘thin’ and ‘dth’ as in ‘the’) -
‘I want a room for -’ ‘posoh kAHnee?’ - ‘How much (is)?’ (pointing at the relevant item)
Quite useful are: ‘kalimEhra’ - good morning/day; ‘kalispEHra’ - good evening; and
‘kalinEEkhta’ - goodnight.
