  2. 2. What is Hashtag ?  the HASH sign turns any word or group of words that directly follow it into a searchable link.  This allows you to organize content and track discussion topics based on those keywords.  So, if you wanted to post about the Breaking Bad finale, you would include #BreakingBad in your tweet to join the conversation.  Click on a hashtag to see all the posts that mention the subject in real time.
  3. 3. Hashtag History  In 2007, developer Chris Messina proposed, in a tweet, that Twitter begin grouping topics using the hash symbol. Twitter initially rejected the idea  On August 23, 2007 the very first hashtag was used on Twitter.  Twitter Makes It Official By July 2009  In 2010, Twitter introduced Trending Topics  Facebook Makes It Official June 2013 average of 58 million tweets a day
  4. 4. Why Use a Hashtag?  Hashtags make it easier for people to find and follow discussions about brands, events and promotions. They also let brands track the performance of promotions across social media.
  5. 5. How do you make a hashtag?  You create a hashtag by putting a pound sign (#) in front of a word.  You could tweet: Beat my personal best. 10k in under 37 minutes. OR you could tweet Beat my personal best. 10k in under 37 minutes. #running Which does the job. But why not add a hashtag?
  6. 6. Which characters can you include in a #hashtag?  spaces are an absolute no-no.  use capitals instead underscore (#BlueJasmine) not (#blue_jasmine)  Numbers are supported, ex . #50ShadesOfGrey  special characters are out  if you are trying to reach someone directly, don’t use a hashtag. Use @username
