United Learning is proud to bring you our new video technology that allows educators and stu- dents the opportunity to view educational content on demand. unitedstreaming.com unitedstreaming.com is a video download and streaming system that instantly delivers over 1,400 educational core-curriculum digital videos and 12,000 clips. By simply searching our database, users are able to easily locate grade and subject specific content, and view the videos right on their computers. This can be done by downloading it onto their desktops or a local server, or by live streaming. Each video has been indexed, which gives the option of viewing the entire program or watching a short clip. Programs align with national and state-level standards and include ancillary materials for teachers and students. The programs are meant to bring any core-curriculum subject alive in any education- al environment. Programs are provided from award winning producers including United Learning, Weston Woods, TV Ontario, Environmental Media, Rainbow Educational Media,and others. Step 3: Search by keyword, subject area and grade level,curriculum standard, or the “All Available Titles” list. Click “go” next to your search. Step 2: Select a clip or entire program to view and decide whether to stream or download your video. *Please Note: The first video title listed is the full-length video (notice the number of minutes next to the title). *Windows Media Player or QuickTime is required.   7. 7. Downloading and Saving the Video Clips PC Users... Internet Explorer: 1. Hover your mouse over this button and right click. 2. Click and scroll down the pop-up menu that appears to “Save Target As…” . 3. You will see a pop-up screen that asks you to save your video clip. You may give your video a different name. Navigate to a folder to save your video. *Tip: Save your video and any document that hyperlinks to your video in the same folder. This way, if you drag the entire folder to a storage device later (zip disk;other),the document will correctly hyperlink to your clip. Netscape Navigator: 1. Hover your mouse over this button and right click. 2. Click and scroll down the pop-up menu that appears to “Save Link As…”. 3. Navigate to a folder to save your video. *Tip: Save your video and any document that hyperlinks to your video in the same folder. To Play a Downloaded Video Full Screen Go to “View” and scroll to “Full Screen” Next to the words “Full Screen” you can . view the shortcut command “Alt + Enter” . Click and scroll down the pop-up menu that appears to “Download Link to Disk…” . 3. You will see a pop-up screen that asks you to save your video clip. You may give your video a different name. Navigate to a folder to save your video. (We suggest download- ing to the desktop or creating a video folder). 4. Save the file extension (.asf for Windows Media Files or .mov for QuickTime Files). Netscape Navigator: 1. Hover your mouse over this button and right click and hold. 2. Click and scroll down the pop-up menu that appears to “Save Link As…” . 3.In your window, select “Source” under the pop-up menu that appears. Do not save as a “text” file. 4. Save the file extension (.asf for Windows Media Files or .mov for QuickTime Files). *Tip: Save your video and any document that hyperlinks to your video in the same folder. This way, if you drag the entire folder to a storage device later (zip disk;other),the document will still correctly hyperlink to your clip. Finding and Playing Your Downloaded Video Windows Media: If the downloaded video clip looks like this: …Double click on the icon and your video will play. If your downloaded video clip looks like this: …Open your Windows Media Player application and then go to “File”>“Open” and find the file. Then your video will play. QuickTime: Double click on your Video File or Open your QuickTime Player and Go to “File”>“Open” and find the file. To Play a Downloaded Video Full Screen Go to“View” and scroll to “Full Screen” .Next to the words “Full Screen”you can view the shortcut commands. Downloading Teacher’s Guides and Blackline Masters A link for teacher’s guides and blackline masters (lessons and student activities) will be displayed above the title. *Tip: You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the guides.I f a “pdf” file does not appear,you must go to www.adobe.com to download their free “Acrobat”Reader” . PC Users: 1. Click once on the blue hyperlink that will say“Teacher’s Guide” or “Blackline Masters” . 2. From here,you will have in your shortcuts window, a floppy disk icon to save, a print- er icon to print. If you do not see these, go to “File”> “Print” . Option: By right clicking over the blue hyperlink, you can open,print, or save the file. Macintosh Users: After you have selected a video, you can click on the blue link that says “Blackline Masters” or “Teacher’s Guide” The file will be downloaded. . *On Internet Explorer: A “Download Manager” window will appear, telling you the name of the file downloaded and its status and how much time remains to download the file. 1. Navigate to where you save your downloads (the same place most likely where your downloaded videos are). *Tip: Some computers will download files to the desktop.Networked computers might have downloads saved to your network folder.Be sure to have“All files” showing under the field name. 2.   10. 10. Downloading the Windows Media Player for Windows™ In order to view videos on unitedstreaming.com,it is necessary to download and install the Windows Media Player on to your computer. Here are the step-by-step instructions for a PC User: 1. Visit www.unitedstreaming.com and enter your username and password. 2. Click on ONLINE HELP at the top of the web page. 3. Click on Getting Started as shown below: 4. Click on: 5. You will be taken to the Microsoft Download page. Scroll down until you see the correct player and select Download Now (Win95 users select Player 6.4). Download to your Desktop. 6. After the download is complete, look on your desktop for the “mp71”or “mpfull” icon and double click on it: 7. Follow each of the installation steps. Your computer will likely restart. 8. Find the Windows Media Player on your Desktop. You should see this icon. You are now ready to view videos from unitedstreaming.com.   11. 11. Downloading the Windows Media Player™ for Macintosh In order to view videos on unitedstreaming.com,it is necessary to download and install the Windows Media Player™ on to your computer. Here are the step-by- step instructions for a Macintosh: 1. Visit www.unitedstreaming.com and enter your username and password. 2. Click on ONLINE HELP at the top of the web page. 3. Click on Getting Started as shown below: 4. Click on: 5. You will be taken to the Microsoft Download page. Scroll down until you see the following and click on Download Now. 6. After the download is complete, look on your desktop for the Windows Media Installer™ Folder and double click on it: 7. The Windows Media Installer™ will then appear. Double click on this Icon: 8. Follow each of the installation steps. After installing the Media Player™, your computer will restart. 9. Find the Windows Media Player™ on your Hard Drive and drag it to the Desktop. Inserting a Hyperlink to Your Video (once your video has been downloaded and saved) For Microsoft© Word and PowerPoint,both on a Macintosh and PC, follow the directions below to cre- ate a link to your video. 1.To insert a hyperlink,highlight the text you wish to be a link To embed a video clip: Go to Insert>Movies and Sounds>Movie from File and navigate to find your saved clip. Hyperlink: allows you to navigate to your DOWNLOADED video and create a link. REMEMBER: highlight your text first and then go to Insert>Hyperlink. 2. Next, go to Insert>Hyperlink. Here, the window will prompt you to find the file at the right of the screen to Browse your files to find your video. 3. Navigate to your video. BE SURE TO SHOW “ALL FILES” IN THE POP-UP WINDOW UNDER THE FIELD NAME. Otherwise, it will appear you have no videos downloaded. 4. Click OK. 5. Click OK again.
