  • 1. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming K-12 NCIH Migration to H.323
  • 2. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming Agenda • Welcome- Carole Stern • Overview- Ken Nuebler • Network Preparation- John Paz • Room / Codec Considerations- Margaret Melvin • E-rate- Kathryn Wilson • Questions
  • 3. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming ITS Video Statistics • 55,086 hours July 06 - June 07 • Roughly 100 conferences / day • 199 NCVIP sites • 78 NCIH sites • 277 Total sites in the scheduler • 32 Developing sites
  • 4. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming Major Reasons for Migration • Industry standard moving from NCIH (H.320) to Video Over IP (H.323) • All sites under one operating standard--H.323 • Ability to offer video services to more K-12 educational institutions under same funding structure • The ATM NCIH network is going away
  • 5. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming DPI Funding • DPI will continue to pay the monthly video service fee for all migrating sites and new sites on a case by case basis. • Site pays for circuit and internet connection. – Existing internet connection may have enough bandwidth to support video over IP and your data traffic.
  • 6. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming E-Rate Implications • Currently IP Video (H.323) Service fee not eligible for E-Rate funding. • IP Video sites will not participate in the NCIH E- Rate Consortium. • E-Rate may be filed for internet connectivity by the school districts. • Check back regularly
  • 7. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming Migration Steps Summary • Contact your ITS Video Services Regional Coordinator through ITS Service Desk • Evaluate bandwidth requirements for data and video on your campus • Obtain quote from ITS if keeping your circuit or upgrading your circuit.
  • 8. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming Migration Steps Summary • Review Video Over IP Guidelines document for LAN traversal and Quality of Service (QoS) recommendations • Evaluate codec equipment – Galaxy and Appsview VTELS beyond end-of-life – No longer supported by VTEL – Not recommended for Video over IP – ITS maintains a list of certified Codecs
  • 9. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming Migration Steps Summary • Submit appropriate paperwork to ITS – STS-WSQ Form (To request circuit w/QoS quote) – STS-01 Form (To cancel your circuit/NCIH Service) – STS-01 Form (To upgrade your circuit w/QoS) – VNS-01 Form (To order your new Video over IP service) – IP Video Service Level Agreement Signature page – IP Video Service Certification Form
  • 10. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming Migration Steps Summary • Certify new connection (regardless of ISP provider) • Allow time for NCVIP (NC Video over IP) Web Scheduler training
  • 11. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming Migration Milestones • Community Colleges migrated 2005-2006 • E-Rate filing dates mid November – January • K-12 and State agency sites are migrating now through October 31, 2008
  • 12. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming Sites That Migrated Summer 2006 – December 2006 • Washington HS • Maiden HS • Brevard HS The following schools came on initially as NCVIP: • Northside HS • Southside HS • Rural Hall Elementary School • Bunn HS • Franklinton HS • Louisburg HS
  • 13. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming High Schools That Migrated Summer 2007 • Bandys HS • Bunker Hill HS • Fred T. Foard HS • St. Stephens HS • Gates Co HS • East Wilkes HS • North Wilkes HS • West Wilkes HS • Wilkes Central HS • NCSSM Studio 1, 2, 3
  • 14. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming Non HS Sites That Migrated Summer 2007 •Coastal AHEC-New Hanover Medical Center •Museum of Natural Science
  • 15. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming Look for the HS Migration Link http://www.ncih.net/hsmigration/ Live Archive www.ncconnect.org and the HS Migration site
  • 16. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming Network Preparation- John Paz ITS Service Desk ITS.Incidents@ncmail.net (800) 722-3946 Video Services Operational Information www.ncih.net HS Migration Link http://www.ncih.net/hsmigration/
  • 17. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming Network Configuration • ITS WAN Offerings • The Ideal Network • Quality of Service • VLANS • Choosing not to implement QoS • The Real Network • Real World Case Study
  • 18. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming Current ITS Managed WAN Offerings http://www.its.state.nc.us/ServiceCatalog/WideAreaNetworkWAN.asp • T1-ATM QoS • 3 mb – ATM QoS • 6 mb – ATM QoS • 10 mb Metro E • 20 mb Metro E • 45 mb Metro E • 100mb Metro E Telcos also provide these options
  • 19. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming
  • 20. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming If you choose to implement VLANS and QoS • Both the WAN and LAN must be designed for QoS • To support VLANS, WAN must be ordered correctly • To support QoS, WAN must be ordered correctly • Better Quality means higher cost • Bandwidth is not shared but is separated • Unused video bandwidth will not be given to data
  • 21. Video/Multimedia Services Videoconferencing Webconferencing Streaming If you choose not to implement VLANS and QoS • The overall quality will be reduced • The configuration will be less complex • The cost to implement will be lower • You may experience increased packet loss • Bandwidth is being shared by data and video • High utilization of data will lower the quality of video
