How to Search Discovery Education How to Search Discovery Education Document Transcript

    • INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS Alleghany County Elementary Schools GET STARTED WITH DISCOVERY EDUCATION STREAMING VIDEO CLIPS SEARCH FOR VIDEOS Log in to your account on Discovery Education streaming: http://streaming.discoveryeducation.com/index.cfm There are several ways to search for videos and other materials in Discovery Ed streaming: Keyword search, Advanced Search, Subject/Grade search, and Curriculum Standards search. 1. Keyword Search: type in a keyword or phrase in the search window at the top of the page and click the Search button Carol Almarez 1 HowTo Instructional Technology Resource Teacher 9/16/09 rev Alleghany County Elementary Schools
    • You can choose to search within all the Discovery Education services, or just “DE Streaming” (video clips) You can choose the type of media to search for. In this example we’re searching for video segments (clips) on fractions. It doesn’t show in this image, but you can also specify a grade level. I checked the box next to grade 3-5. Here are the results: You can see there were 95 results, sorted by Best Match. You may want to narrow your search. Some options for this are in the left-hand panel. 2. Advanced Search: clicking Advanced Search takes you to this page: Carol Almarez 2 HowTo Instructional Technology Resource Teacher 9/16/09 rev Alleghany County Elementary Schools
    • You can still do the keyword search, or you can use the dropdown arrows in each box to narrow your search as much as you want in a single search. Using these options, you can get videos (or other services) by selected grade level; subject; date (recent copyright); Publisher (only videos from Scholastic, for example); Editable Titles (videos you can pull into MovieMaker and change); videos for non-English speaking students, etc. 3. Subject/Grade search: if you’re not sure what you want, or want to do a fairly broad search, select a SUBJECT from the list in the left panel on the Welcome page: Carol Almarez 3 HowTo Instructional Technology Resource Teacher 9/16/09 rev Alleghany County Elementary Schools
    • …and continue to narrow your results at each screen (Discovery Ed is assuming you want the DE Streaming service—you can change this if you want) You can narrow further by subject, grade, media type, and video detail. • When you’ve narrowed down to the video clips you want, you can mouse over one of them and get a description and short preview: 4. Curriculum Standards Search The state of Virginia should already be filled out for you. When you’ve filled in the options shown in the dropdown menus, you’ll see a screen like this: Carol Almarez 5 HowTo Instructional Technology Resource Teacher 9/16/09 rev Alleghany County Elementary Schools
    • Select one of the curriculum strands. Click on the standards you want: Carol Almarez 6 HowTo Instructional Technology Resource Teacher 9/16/09 rev Alleghany County Elementary Schools
    • If DE has a video fitting the standard, you will see a selection that you can narrow further: …until you get to the selection(s) that you want. Carol Almarez 7 HowTo Instructional Technology Resource Teacher 9/16/09 rev Alleghany County Elementary Schools
