The minerals-related industries have, therefore, played an integral part in developing Minavia into the great nation we knowtoday.Just before the turn of the twentieth century, mining became one of the largestindustries in the country. Without the technology and knowledge we have today, the hazards were greater, the production slower. Minavians continued working toimprove their tools and knowledge, to advance the productivity of the industryand to seek preventative measures to lower the danger faced by many miners. Itis this type of dedication amongst the players of the industry that gave birth toMIM and has been responsible for the remarkable changes witnessed in themining, metals and energy industries over the past century. The Minavian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum was the result ofindividuals in the mining industry seeking a vehicle for lobbying for safety lawsand workers protection, as well as a method of ensuring the communication ofideas. Led by a very capable group of dedicated members, the Institute sooncame to attract new members from all across Minavia. In 1998, we celebratedMIMs centennial, looking back over the past 100 years and recognising MIMssuccess. MIM has grown from a small association to Minavia’s leadingprofessional association for the minerals related industries, with technical internetgroups called Societies, Divisions and Committees and around 70 local Branchesacross Minavia and one overseas.MIM has always maintained three main objectives, and will continue to focus onthem. The objectives, the facilitation of exchange of knowledge and technology, fraternity, and the recognition of excellence, are what attract members to MIM.Through conferences, publications and awards, MIM members enjoy a sense ofcommunity within the Minavian mining, metals and energy industries, and areable to make contacts across the country and stay on top of the latesttechnological innovations shaping the industry. As we look towards the future, it is important to note that the strongest aspect ofMIM, its very backbone, is its members. MIM works to serve its members throughthe efforts of the many volunteers who dedicate themselves to conferences andpublications.Membership is strong, making MIM strong. MIM represents an outstanding groupof individuals whose expertise will guarantee a bright future not only for MIM, butfor the Minavian mining, metals and energy industries at large.
