  2. 2. Passover – Some Background 1. Recalls their freedom from Egypt 2. “Part” (1st day) of the 7 day Feast of Unleavened Bread (Req’d) 3. Pasach – “spread wings around to protect” (read Matt 23:37-38)

Matt 23:37-38 37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! 38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. 39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord (Psa 118).

Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD. Pasach – “spread wings around to protect” (Matt 23:37-38) 3. Paschal lamb represented delivery from judgement AND sustaining meal for journey 4. Consume all of it this night 5. Blood on the lintels “when I see the blood”
  6. 6. Passover – Some Background (Recalls their freedom from Egypt) 6. Unleavened bread represented hurried flight AND a set apart, holy people 7. The search to remove leaven became key part of preparations (Read Ezek 34:11; Psa 139:23,24)
  7. 7. Ezek 34:11 “For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.” Psa 139:23,24 “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
  8. 8. Passover – Some Background (Recalls their freedom from Egypt) 6. Unleavened bread represented hurried flight AND a set apart, holy people 7. The search to remove leaven became key part of preparations (Ezek 34:10-12; Psa 139:1,23,24) 8. The bitter herbs were to remember what slavery was like 9. (we forget, and want to return!)
  9. 9. Passover – Some Background (Recalls their freedom from Egypt) 10. Four Cups – Four Promises (Read Ex 6:6,7) 1. I will bring you out (Ex 6:6a) 2. I will save you (Ex 6:6b) 3. I will redeem you (Ex 6:6c) 4. I will take you to myself (Ex 6:7) 10. Passover was the premier Jewish festival 11. Ex 6:7 is at least one of the key passages of the OT (perhaps THE key verse of scripture).
  10. 10. Ex 6:6 “Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments:”
  11. 11. Ex 6:7 “And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.”

Matt 26 17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? 18 And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand; I will keep the passover at thy house with my disciples. 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the passover.
