This is the Computing curriculum, Powerpoint has gone. Where will the information come from? Wikipedia.... Live with it..... Don’t ignore it. Now the students are allowed to ask why things work. Wikipedia is easy to take the hood off. Its all available to see and you can ask questions about it right down to the bit level.

  • That’s the dream, but its “us” who own it. Do you remember that the English Wikipedia went off one day? That’s because 1500 people met on the web and told the staff do it.... And they did @victuallers

  • This is what the universities say .... We have professers using it. We have volunteers who are available .... But are being used in univesities.
  • These are the kind of numbers you see for mid range articles. Some articles only get a few hits a day. But who is looking up “Dependent and independent variables”? It isnt the Daily Mail? Or bored teenagers… this is serious work. Wikipedia reminds people of what they should know .. (Data from Mpoulter)
  • C3 Wikimedia and our most famous project (Wikipedia) is full of big numbers. 4.5m articles in English, over 100 languages, over 30 m articles. Possibly the most amazing is that we have over 500 million different people visit our site every month. We are in the top five web sites in the World .... And we are free!

  • The internet of things is coming. Your fridge will switch off when the electricity is expensive. This is going to require a lot of bright creative people. Teachers create bright creativer people. The Tesco supermarket above is 9 inches thick.
  • Virtual reality is do able now. Your school can use sketch-up to create models of buildings and put them on google earth. Students can add their houses to open street map. They can maintain the school wiki page.
