What brings on the anxiety attacks and doyou know how to stop panic attacks?A good question to start with is:Do I Have Anxiety Attacks?Anxiety can be defined as a reaction to fear. In fact fear that is either real orimaginary. The stand and fight or flight syndrome that is built into all of us,inherited from our earliest ancestors. Without that instinct they would havenot survived for very long.Have you ever been walking home late at night when all has been quiet apartfrom the sound of your own footsteps on the pavement. You know that nobody else is around and what you can hear is the echoingsound of your own steps. And yet something inside is telling you to turnaround and face who or whatever is following you. You start to walk faster.Your heart rate begins to speed up and you start to feel as if you are fightingfor breath. The palms of your hands start to sweat and the panic increasesuntil you instinctively turn around to check that there is no-one behind you. Aclassic anxiety attack that can escalate to a level where you tell yourself aheart attack is beginning. The above can be described as generalized anxiety disorder symptoms.Anxiety brought on not by a situation but a dread of a situation that mayoccur. Methods of Managing Anxiety – The Health and Wellbeing Magazine 3

You cannot see the front of the queue andyou have no idea how long it has been building up.Naturally this also leads to a build up of traffic behind you. You are trappedand claustrophobia begins. The stress and anxiety starts to build up and, what makes it worse, could itbe that you are starting to get the urge to use the bathroom.Common sense tells you that it would be a further half an hour before younormally got to work and have the chance to use the bathroom. But asanxiety comes in through one door common sense goes out through another. In other words it is uncertainty, fear of the unknown that triggers anxiety.Learning how to control anxiety is the first step to overcoming it.But what you must remember is that different people experience differentlevels of stress. One person walking into a room of people that he or she has not met beforemay only be a minor challenge. In their case they will experience someanxiety but at the first hello or handshake the anxiety starts to diminish. But for another person the same scenario can bring on chronic anxiety that isvery difficult to get under control. Sadly if this describes you then you mustlearn how to manage your anxiety disorder or anxiety of this type can lead todepression. Methods of Managing Anxiety – The Health and Wellbeing Magazine 4
