3. Methods of Managing Anxiety
Methods of managing anxiety vary depending upon the level of stress and
anxiety that you are experiencing. What brings on the anxiety attacks and do
you know how to stop panic attacks?
A good question to start with is:
Do I Have Anxiety Attacks?
Anxiety can be defined as a reaction to fear. In fact fear that is either real or
imaginary. The stand and fight or flight syndrome that is built into all of us,
inherited from our earliest ancestors. Without that instinct they would have
not survived for very long.
Have you ever been walking home late at night when all has been quiet apart
from the sound of your own footsteps on the pavement.
You know that nobody else is around and what you can hear is the echoing
sound of your own steps. And yet something inside is telling you to turn
around and face who or whatever is following you. You start to walk faster.
Your heart rate begins to speed up and you start to feel as if you are fighting
for breath. The palms of your hands start to sweat and the panic increases
until you instinctively turn around to check that there is no-one behind you. A
classic anxiety attack that can escalate to a level where you tell yourself a
heart attack is beginning.
The above can be described as generalized anxiety disorder symptoms.
Anxiety brought on not by a situation but a dread of a situation that may
occur.

Examples of Anxiety
For example, you are travelling to work in the morning and you see a long
queue of traffic in front of you. You cannot see the front of the queue and
you have no idea how long it has been building up.
Naturally this also leads to a build up of traffic behind you. You are trapped
and claustrophobia begins.
The stress and anxiety starts to build up and, what makes it worse, could it
be that you are starting to get the urge to use the bathroom.
Common sense tells you that it would be a further half an hour before you
normally got to work and have the chance to use the bathroom. But as
anxiety comes in through one door common sense goes out through another.
In other words it is uncertainty, fear of the unknown that triggers anxiety.
Learning how to control anxiety is the first step to overcoming it.
But what you must remember is that different people experience different
levels of stress.
One person walking into a room of people that he or she has not met before
may only be a minor challenge. In their case they will experience some
anxiety but at the first hello or handshake the anxiety starts to diminish.
But for another person the same scenario can bring on chronic anxiety that is
very difficult to get under control. Sadly if this describes you then you must
learn how to manage your anxiety disorder or anxiety of this type can lead to
depression.

5. Methods of Managing Anxiety
Are there ways to manage anxiety effectively or of managing anxiety and
depression without medication? Yes is the answer and following are some
methods to manage anxiety.
Methods of Managing Anxiety
To begin to manage your anxiety disorder it is not a bad start to book a visit
to see a professional medical person.
Your self diagnosis may be correct or it could be wide of the mark.
Sometimes we can be so close to a problem that we cannot see the whole
picture. What you think is an anxiety disorder may be a symptom of another
underlying medical problem. If it truly is anxiety related you can be referred
to a professional psychologist will help you to understand your anxiety.
Medication may be prescribed in conjunction with other therapies to remedy
the problem.
One of the supplements for anxiety commonly used is St John's Wort. A
natural substance that many like to use instead of artificially manufactured
drugs. There are reports of people taking a course of St John's Wort and
never having to take medication again whereas anxiety sufferers taking
pharmaceuticals have repeat bouts.
A word of caution. Never self prescribe if you are also taking other
prescription drugs. St John's Wort for instance might be classified as a pretty
clean natural substance but it will not have been tested against the
medication that you are already taking.

Methods of Managing Anxiety - Yoga
What are the benefits of Yoga for health and fitness? Yoga is an excellent
way of managing anxiety through meditation combined with managing
anxiety with exercise. It takes a while to master. Don't expect to feel the
benefits immediately. It is a gradual process that helps you to gain control of
your breathing, quieten your mind stretch out tight muscles. Learn and
master the basics and meditate for the length of time that you are
comfortable with.
Methods of Managing Anxiety – Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy for anxiety is an interesting area. Hypnosis for anxiety can be
with a trained hypnotherapist or by self-hypnosis. The latter may sound
strange but does work. Buy a CD or download an MP3 tile. Do not just buy a
cheap relaxation disc. A title by a professionally trained hypnotherapist is not
that expensive anyway. And once you have it you can listen to it many, many
times. They are best listened to through headphones in a place where you
are comfortable and not likely to be disturbed. Again be patient as it takes a
short time for you to begin to trust the hypnotherapist and relax. When you
do you will probably drift off to sleep until you hear the command to wake
up! Don't worry, you will not have missed anything. This is the way the
sessions are designed so that you will relax and absorb the teaching.
Sleep is very important and enables our batteries to recharge and our bodies
to repair. Self hypnosis titles can also help here.

Methods of Managing Anxiety – Exercise
Managing anxiety with exercise is another excellent solution. Don't think that
this means spending hours at the gym. There is no better exercise than
taking a walk in the fresh air. You will be surprised how your head clears,
thoughts whizzing through your brain without you even realizing it.
Methods of Managing Anxiety – Start a Project
Start a project or take up a hobby. It does not have to hit the bank balance
either. What about gardening, reading or going through your music
collection? A DIY project will undoubtedly involve some expenditure but the
feeling of satisfaction when completed successfully makes it worth while. A
feel good moment!
Methods of Managing Anxiety – What Not to Do
One of the methods of managing anxiety often employed is to reach for a
bottle of alcohol. Yes you may have a short period of elation but that in the
vast majority of people soon turns to depression. Resist the urge, it is not
how to deal with depression or anxiety.
Lastly, do not suffer in silence. You are not on your own in any way. There
are many others out there who are suffering from anxiety and there are
professionals to advise on long term management anxiety programs and
therapies.
