Many people set goals especially at the beginning of the year (as New Year's resolutions) and never achieve them. The Happiness Yacht is a timeline-storymap that can be used to achieve goals in personal and business lives. The Happiness Yacht synthesizes ideas from many business tools including Blue Ocean Strategy, Design Thinking, Business Modeling, and the Lean Startup Methodology.

  • Ali, Your questions are always welcome and I always look forward to reading them. Your questions are not just questions. Your questions reflect great thought and insight which I very much value and appreciate. As you suggest, I could have called the above diagram the 'Delight Yacht.' However, that name would not have reflected the overarching goal of personal development, which from my perspective, is Happiness. In some of my work, I've equated 'Happiness' with 'Value' so that Happiness is the ratio of Delight to Pain. Thus, for the same amount of delight, a situation with greater pain could lead to lesser happiness. In the sense of business or when I'm focusing on tangibles, I often use the term of 'Value.' Value can be expressed as a ratio of Benefit (Revenue) to Cost. In a business context, I would prefer the name 'Profit Yacht' to the name of 'Revenue Yacht.' The reason is the same as the one that I outlined earlier: 'Profit' is a higher goal than 'Revenue.' Thus, for the same amount of revenue, a situation with greater cost could lead to lesser profit. Also, Profit subsumes the goal of Revenue just like Happiness subsumes the goal of Delight. Further, to focus on Revenue or Delight would mean that one is ignoring the difficulty of making choices as well as trade-offs, for Delight is usually achieved while incurring Pain; Revenue is usually achieved while incurring Cost. I hope that the aforementioned points clarify why I chose the description of 'Happiness Yacht.' As always, thanks for asking.

    I am sorry if I keep asking. Why not the Delight Yacht instead of the Happiness Yacht?
    No matter what this work testifies to your ability to put all relevant ideas and tools in one place. It looks easy, but behind simplicity is a great thinker.
