The Business Model Fishbone is essentially a linear cause-and-effect diagram for visualizing, improving, and innovating on business models. This presentation illustrates the business model of Apple's classic iPod. This multi-purpose fishbone diagram is particularly useful for root-cause analysis and Subversion Analysis (Failure Mode Effect Analysis) of business models.

  • @MichaelKing9: Michael, I'm glad that you like the Business Model Fishbone. For me, the ultimate purpose of a business model is to fulfil an organization's Ideals/Mission/Vision/Core Values. Consequently, I have put 'Mission/Vision' in the head of the fishbone. This topic of 'Ideals/Mission/Vision/Core Values' is lacking in the Business Model Canvas as well as many other business model representations.

Also, I feel that the Environment should play a strong role in business model design and innovation. One advantage of the Business Model Fishbone is that it facilitates business model documentation, analysis, design, and innovation at both enterprise (Value Chain) and industry (Five Forces) levels. The Business Model Fishbone allows a user to assess the attractiveness of the industry in which the business finds itself.

By considering the Environment in its entirety, the Business Model Fishbone goes beyond Michael Porter's Five Forces/Industry Analysis. Consequently, the user could also carry out risk analysis of a business model by analyzing the susceptibility of the business model to PESTLIED factors. (I use the acronym PESTLIED to stand for Political; Economic, Social; Technological; Legal, International; Environmental; Demographic Factors).

Please feel free to discuss any point you may have regarding the Business Model Fishbone.

    In the meantime, best regards.

    Rod.

  • I like this one too. Well done Rod. I was happy to see Mission and Values at the fron end. I need to think a bit more about the Environment especially competition and PESTEL.
