Hughes: Infrastructure for broadband networks
After Hughes introduced the first satellitebased networks in the mid1980s, using Kuband
VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) technology, the company was able to continuously
strengthen its leading role in the market for satellitebased broadband solutions and services.
These networks ensure the rapid and reliable transmission of data, speech, videos and
multimedia to an unlimited number of locations worldwide. Since then, Hughes has
manufactured 1.9 million VSAT communications systems and delivered them to customers in
more than 100 countries. According to the 2007 COMSYS VSAT report, Hughes now leads
the worldwide VSAT market with a 50percent market share.
Hughes products and solutions include broadband satellite systems with routers, terminals
and NOCs; mobile satellite systems; and the AIReach® Broadband pointtomultipoint
network solution for wireless broadband access.
Costeffective broadband satellite platforms for large and small networks
The HN and HX platforms were developed in order to offer a wide range of broadband
services for high transmissioncapacity requirements; this includes VoIP, fast internet
access, distance learning, videoconferencing and multimedia. They are fully compatible with
the IPoS and DVBS2 standards.
· For large and mediumsized networks: The HN system is a robust and flexible
nextgeneration platform that meets the needs of large and mediumsized companies
as well as public institutions. Innovative operating functions allow users to bundle the
satellites’ transmission capacity, resulting in optimal broadband access anytime,
· For small networks: The HX system is a compact IPbased platform, ideal for small
networks with high quality requirements. The HX system is based on the functions
and applications of the highperforming HN platform. In addition, the HX system uses
advanced bandwidthmanagement technology. The HX system is particularly suitable
for broadbandfocused applications.
Hughes’ latest generation HX broadband satellite routers, the HX260 Mesh and the HX200,
provide up to twice the throughput performance and build on the advanced DVBS2/ACM
bandwidth management of the highly successful HN System. Both incorporate a high
performance processor and ample onboard memory to deliver carrier grade performance for
business private networks, cellular backhaul, and a wide range of broadband applications.
The HX260 features an integrated, multichannel TDMA demodulator, enabling simultaneous
mesh and star mode connectivity within the HX System ideal for costeffective private
networks providing a mix of voice and data services, and easily managed from one central
Hughes is investing in the future of satellitebased broadband technology, and is considered
an industry trailblazer in terms of developing technological expertise and international
standards. Consequently, the Hughes satellitebroadband solutions are based on established
standards used by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the
Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) and the European Telecommunications
Standards Institute (ETSI). The standards supported include IPoS/DVBS2, RSMA and
HughesNet: Broadband services and solutions
Hughes Europe offers its powerful Managed Network Services and Managed Digital Media
Solutions to companies and other organizations under the HughesNet brand name.
Managed Network Services
The Managed Network Services include a complete range of offerings for creating and
applying effective communications networks, from planning and implementation to operation
and maintenance. Hughes Europe’s Managed Network Services are available throughout
Europe; they are particularly well suitable for large and mediumsized international
companies with widely branching organizational structures, and have three distinct
· Accessibility: Effective terrestrial and satellitesupported broadband technologies
are connected to a dual network that is nearly 100 percent accessible from any
location. Specific requirements, dependent on the geographical location and intended
usage, determine the appropriate type of access for each company. Satellite
supported access is also configured for the “last mile,” which means that if a
transmission path is interrupted, there is always an adequate alternative available.
· Optimized networks: Customers can choose between pure DSL networks, satellite
supported networks and appropriate hybrid solutions. This provides them with an
integrated broadband network that can be dynamically adapted to meet higher
bandwidth and service demands, serving all locations worldwide in an efficient and
· Backup network access: Today, companies are faced with the challenge of
reaching customers in real time, often in remote locations. Hughes Europe’s satellite
supported backup service ensures this connection with the customer even if the
primary connection is interrupted. Depending on a company’s needs, this service can
be used to protect the entire system, or individual parts. Hughes Europe guarantees
the highest security standards in processing its customers’ data.
Managed Digital Media Solutions
With the Managed Digital Media Solutions multimedia product suite, Hughes Europe offers
its business customers three solutions to help modern, globally active companies maintain
their competitive edge; digital endclient information, digital employee training and video
based company communications of all kinds. HughesNet Managed Digital Media Solutions
provide complete one stop solutions.
· Digital Signage: Now more than ever, in order to catch and hold the attention of end
clients, companies need to be able to transmit information in a timely and targeted
way. Digital Signage makes it possible to meet these demands. For instance, Digital
Signage allows retailers, gas stations and banks to enter customer information on a
flexible basis. This in turn allows the right content to reach customers at the right time
and place. Hughes Europe’s Digital Signage solution includes installation, operation,
management, content management and maintenance, and it can be adapted to
customers’ individual needs.
Hughes implemented the first Digital Signage solutions for US commercial enterprises
more than ten years ago; it has continued to expand this sector using its technical
expertise from the VSAT core business, as well as through strategic partnerships.
· Business IPTV (company communications and employee training): Using
HughesNet Business IPTV, companies can provide their employees with company
information on an individual basis, in small groups or all at once. HughesNet
Business IPTV also makes it possible to hold employee training sessions via live
video broadcasts or ondemand playback at one or more locations.
· Content Distribution Services: Increasingly complex applications, along with the
constantly growing volume of data traffic, can overload the network and disrupt
business processes. With the HughesNet Content Distribution Service, companies
can increase their network capacities in a simple and costeffective manner. The
Hughes NOC enables efficient, flexible and reliable simultaneous data transmission
to an unlimited number of locations via satellite and multicast.
Hughes Europe’s customers include leading European companies from various industries,
including automobiles, retail, energy (oil & gas), financial services, the hotel and restaurant
industry, IT and telecommunications, and the lottery.
In 2005, together with its customers Tesco and ASDA, Hughes Europe received European
Retail Solutions Awards for, respectively, “Most Innovative Use of InStore Technology” and
“Best Use of Technology in Employee Development.”
