What is Virtualization?  Traditionally the Operating System (OS) and its applications were tightly coupled to the hardware they were installed on  Virtualization breaks the link between operating system and physical hardware  This allows the ability to change hardware without replacing the OS or applications  Additionally multiple instances of an OS with independent applications can now run on the same hardware HypervisorOperating System Application

Typical Hardware Architecture  In the data center: • Storage Array (iSCSI, FC, NFS) • 2-5 Physical Servers • Redundant Gigabit Switches  In the office and on the shop floor: • Legacy desktops • Ruggedized laptops • Solid state thin clients • Tablets (iPad / Android)
  5. 5. Copyright © 2014 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 5 Industrial Data Center – E1000 Supports up to 10 virtual machines • VMware ESXi pre-configured • Component Level Redundancy (HD, NIC, Power Supply) • Can be integrated into a full IDC at a later time USE CASE: OEM/Single Line • 2 PASS/HMI servers • 1 FactoryTalk Historian • 1 FactoryTalk AssetCentre • Domain controllers and other management services Resilient compute resources for small industrial data centers
  6. 6. Copyright © 2014 Rockwell Automation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 6 Industrial Data Center – E2000 (Essentials) Supports up to 60 virtual machines • VMware HA and FT • Maximum 3 physical servers • Maximum 75 disks USE CASE: Multiple Line/Small Plant • 4 PASS/HMI servers • FactoryTalk Batch • FactoryTalk Historian • FactoryTalk AssetCentre • 15 Operator stations • 5 Engineering Stations • Domain controllers and other management services Resilient compute resources for small industrial data centers
  7. 7. Copyright © 2014 Rockwell Automation, Inc. VMware Licensing For Development  VMware Player is free for noncommercial use  VMware Workstation is a retail and download product For Production  VMware vSphere and VMware View are sold through resellers and hardware OEMs  VMware View is sold by concurrent user and is available either stand alone or as an add-on for vSphere  VMware vSphere is sold in 5 editions with different functionality enabled

Microsoft Licensing for Virtualization  Servers:  Each host must be entitled for the virtual machine “high water mark”  Standard = 2 VM, Datacenter = unlimited VM’s  Desktops:  Client device requires Windows Software Assurance (PC/laptop), Virtual Desktop Access (thin client) subscription  License entitles use of up to 4 vm’s  SQL Server  Licensed per VM or per Physical host server Microsoft Windows licenses are tied to hardware not VMs http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/virtualization.aspx
