  40. 40. 1. Be nice to Inter Library Loan Department. Cheaper than you driving or flying to somewhere else. 2. Remember bribery in small doses works. Bribes and compliments can be interchangeable! 3. Texas universities must share with you for free. Always use them first. 4. Genealogical materials are rarely loaned by public libraries, but universities usually will. 5. Microfilm (not fiche or microcard) is usually only loaned by universities, almost never by public libraries. 6. Always inquire about buying copies of fiche (usually 25¢ or 50¢ per sheet of fiche). Robert’s Rules for Interlibrary Loan r-e-deb@sbcglobal.net • Robert de Berardinis
  41. 41. 7. Books (and other stuff) made before 1900 generally do not get loaned (Hint: they may be on microfilm!). 8. Library of Congress may loan if they are only source and they have two copies and you send a groveling and pleading e-mail. They will make copies (reasonably priced) or microfilm (very expensive). 9. If book is simply unavailable for loan, inquire of stingy library to check index or photocopy names in index of interest. Then order pages from index. Good to have unlimited long distance phone plan. Robert’s Rules on Interlibrary Loan r-e-deb@sbcglobal.net • Robert de Berardinis
  42. 42. <ul><li>Most of the time map photocopies are available for cheap. Some universities, if map is very rare, they will stick it to you. It’s not personal, they stick it to everyone. If alumnus or alumna, send ugly letter to Alumni Association after you get photocopy. Otherwise, accept fate. </li></ul><ul><li>11. For maps, microfilm, and manuscript collections (even on microfilm) from university libraries, chances are very good they have developed finding aids or even indexes on their own (undergraduate and graduate students are cheap slave labor). E-mails cost nothing and may work, but a sweet, unctuous, and solicitous phone call, completely ignoring the words genealogy or family , works better. A food thank you gift insures your questions will be welcome in the future. </li></ul>Robert’s Rules on Interlibrary Loan r-e-deb@sbcglobal.net • Robert de Berardinis
  43. 43. r-e-deb@sbcglobal.net • Robert de Berardinis Erase these terms What’s this stuff? Scroll down a little bit
  44. 44. r-e-deb@sbcglobal.net • Robert de Berardinis Click ‘Search’ when finished

  46. 46. r-e-deb@sbcglobal.net • Robert de Berardinis
  47. 47. <ul><li>The following buttons starting with Sort , are available at top or bottom of screen. They will help expand or refine your searches, or as in the case of E-mail , allow you notify others of particular books or items. Let’s look at these buttons: </li></ul><ul><li>Sort - This allows you to sort any or all of your results to make culling them or researching the materials easier. Sort is available by Title, Author, Date, or Number of Libraries, each or all in Ascending or Descending order. You can use the check boxes to the left of the entries to limit the items for sorting. Not using check boxes will have all returns sorted. You can also e-mail sorted results. Leave JavaScript and Framed links buttons “on.” Have Character Set button in “Standard.” </li></ul><ul><li>Related Subjects - These are other keywords found in the full citations of all the 52 results. That means that using these links, or searches including this keyword will give you more topical material to research. </li></ul>What are all these buttons for? r-e-deb@sbcglobal.net • Robert de Berardinis
  48. 48. <ul><li>Related Authors – This is a list of the authors found in the results and their other catalogues works in WordlCat. WorldCat tries to tie in at least one keyword. </li></ul><ul><li>Limit – This feature is handy when you get hundreds or thousands of results and you want to trim down the list to manageable numbers. The limit searches by subject headings, a form of keyword, is especially handy. </li></ul><ul><li>Print – Gives all the results of first page of results. You may select which results to print in print area. </li></ul><ul><li>Export – This is to export the results list, in whole or marked records only (check boxes) directly to your computer or someone else’s. </li></ul><ul><li>Help - This will contain online help to using WorldCat. Often, a teen-ager is needed to decipher that which appears to be English. </li></ul>What are all these buttons for? r-e-deb@sbcglobal.net • Robert de Berardinis
