  • Social media?• Wikipedia: ”media for social interaction, using highly accessible and scalable communication techniques. Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue”• People share stories, knowledge, experience• It’s about conversations / interaction, not about pushing messages• It’s here to stay and there’s a lot of it Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 6

  • 6.Online networks vs CV Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 30
  • Build your network• What makes you tick?• What’s your strategy?• Who do you know?• Behave yourself (also) online• Use your own name• Use LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook but do it wisely• Choose your own channel(s)• (Start to) blog• Share your knowledge• Measure your effort Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 31
  • Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 32
  • What Facebook can do for you?• >900 million members worldwide• over half of them are on mobile• Social networking search becomes more important than google• Impact is potentially endless• Opinion in Facebook on products and services is more important than non-friend opinions• 78% of consumers trust their online experts. Only 14% trusts advertisements Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 33
  • What LinkedIn can do for you• >160 million members worldwide• half of it is from the US• The Netherlands is very active• Average user is a 41 year old man with 15 years of working experience and a household income of > € 90.000• Over 80% of all companies uses LinkedIn in applications• Your resume is out there.• Network and recommendations are important• Find fellow experts in (research)groups and join in the discussions• Exchange of knowledge will bring you (and your research) further Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 34
  • What Twitter can do for you• Modern version of mouth to mouth advertising• News is now on a specific location• 6 degrees of separation?• The news finds you• Influence can be very great• Ideal way to promote your expertise• Ideal way to lead people to your blog• Claim your (research) topics• Ideal to start the discussion Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 35

  • 7.CV and LinkedIn Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 37
  • Curriculum Vitae• CV and résumé is almost the same thing• A résumé usually contains a personal note, a CV does not• Part of your application for a job• Purpose of Letter + CV = to get invited for an interview• Include only relevant info• Customize your CV to the job and company• Approx 1,5 - 2 pages• In IT a bit longer• Backwards chronologically• A company can check the facts: pre-employment-screening• CV is part of the paper age but is not ancient (yet) Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 38
  • 10 things to avoid in a résumé• “I am a team-player”• “I have great communication skills”• “I have a proven track record”• “I am a problem solver”• “I assisted in ...... task”• “I have a strong work-ethic”• “I’m bottom-line focussed”• “I am responsible for ......”• “I’m self-motivated”• “I’m accustomed to a fast-paced environment” Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 39
  • Don’t say it: prove it! Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 40
  • On a résumé• description of objective• description of skills• description of education• description of accomplishments• description of experiences• is a marketing piece: sell yourself• references (check if they can be contacted)• facts• include TopTrack if relevant: tell what you did and what it contributed• photo (headshot)• Hobbies (but only the relevant ones) Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 41
  • Not on a résumé• Age / Birthday (it’s in the date of birth)• Proza• Interests Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 42
  • How your résumé is read• Human resource department scans• One person reads through possibly 100 résumés per day• Yours must be distinctive• The scan takes about 15 seconds per résumé !!!• IF yours stands out:• HR will check some references• HR will google you• HR will possibly read your blog, Facebook etc Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 43
  • LinkedIn• Is about getting work that fits your profile• Scouting through LinkedIn is not uncommon• The job finds you but use the ‘jobs’ tab as well• A recruiter finds you• Relevance is key: experience, education and skills• The strength of LinkedIn is the network• The real strength is in the second degree connections• Strategy: which (2nd degree) contacts can get me the job? Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 44
  • LinkedIn profile• Your CV is not the same as as your LinkedIn profile• Your LI is much richer• It can’t be customized because it’s open to everybody• Is not part of you applying for a job• Include all work (and project) info• The (online) network is your career• Your success depends on who you know• Give and take, don’t ask Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 45
  • Improve your LinkedIn profile• Complete your profile (100%!)• Write a clear mission (in the summary): what is it you want?• Get recommended (recommend people first)• Join groups and participate• The more (real) contacts the better• Ask for an introduction• Ask and answer questions• Bring your online network to the offline world• Keep your profile updated• Use wordpress / slideshare in combination with LinkedIn Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 46
  • People are nothiring a profileThey want the person Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 47
  • Getting the job is about• trust• relationships• proof of excellence Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 48
  • If you’re not onLinkedIn already do so today Interactive workshop “Personal branding” TU Delft 49
