Advanced Networking Full -Time Postgraduate Course School of Computing, Napier University Napier University provides you with an opportunity to develop your information technology knowledge and skills by offering a postgraduate course in Advanced Networking. The postgraduate diploma involves a taught element comprising 30 weeks of study. Learners who complete this successfully may graduate (PgDip), or progress to the MSc dissertation. This can be taken full-time (15 weeks) or part-time (submit within two years of completion of the diploma) OVERVIEW The MSc in Advanced Networking is a technical course, intended for those who wish to extend their existing knowledge of computer networks, particularly in the application and deployment of such networks. It is ideally suited to those who wish to pursue a career in the development and use of practical network systems that address real world problems or situations, as well as being a valuable course for those who wish to pursue a career in research either in areas associated with computer networking. The course core is founded on two primary aspects: modern computer networking practices and current research trends associated with the application and usage of computer networks. The ethos of the course is to extend your existing knowledge of and thinking towards computer networking theory, practice and research. The course incorporates preparation for the Cisco CCNP (Cisco Certified 1 Network Professional). Currently this includes: Remote Access, Routing, Switching, Troubleshooting. Throughout the course, a range of issues relevant to enable students to pursue careers as networking professionals. The topics taught as a part of this course are concerned with the design, implementation and administration of high performance computer network infrastructures and includes an evaluation of methods, techniques, tools and technologies used to develop such infrastructures. The course builds on the level of networking knowledge typical of undergraduate studies by dealing with complex networks, protocols, tools, services, and devices. Furthermore you will learn about current research topics and will demonstrate an understanding of current research and future research directions. 1It should be noted that the Cisco CCNP examinations are not part of the course. ©2005, Napier University Page 1

Advanced Networking (F/T) Napier University, Edinburgh The taught part of your course is delivered through lecture and tutorial sessions in the classroom and is primarily concerned with underlying knowledge and principles. The practical sessions in the laboratories provide a critical appreciation of, and experience with, current technologies and are coordinated with the lectures. Student-centred learning, particularly for the more practical aspects, plays a central role in the course. This means that you will learn some topics mainly through independent study, supported by the key resources supplied. In its full-time form you undertake a three-trimester course. You spend two trimesters studying taught modules. In the final trimester you undertake the MSc dissertation. You may elect to exit from the course with a post-graduate certificate after successful completion of four modules or a post-graduate diploma after successful completion of eight modules. The aims of this course are: 1. to foster a critical understanding of and evaluative approach to the concepts and principles of a variety of advanced networking topics. 2. to develop a critical understanding and awareness of current research in computer networks and future computer networking trends. 3. to develop a critical understanding and awareness of analysis, design and implementation of computer networks 4. to stimulate an enquiring, analytical, creative, and reflective approach that encourages independent judgement and critical awareness. To demonstrate this in relation to current computer networking research. 5. to further develop abilities to reason logically, work effectively as individuals as well as in a team, communicate clearly and in a way which is acceptable for communicating research ideas to peer groups. 6. to ensure that the student has the basis for both future personal development and for continuing professional development A Masters degree in Advanced Networking can open the door to a wide range of careers. Graduates of the course are expected to find employment within a variety of companies as networking professionals. It is expected that some graduates will move into research (e.g. PhD, or as Research Assistants), education, and training. Physical Networking 1& 2 In these modules you will learn about communications systems with the layered model, addressing the physical layer (e.g. connectors and special interfaces), the data link layer (e.g. medium access mechanisms, VLANs, protocols, routing, switching), and the network layer (e.g. network access mechanisms, IP, routing protocols). Network Programming This module will examine techniques of machine-machine communication over the internet. Topics include C# programming, XML schema validation, SOAP services, WSDL and investigating open source approaches to web services. Integrative Project In this module you will take a problem centred approach to dealing with various network scenarios. You will work in groups, and be supported by staff as you learn how to analyse network problems, and to develop appropriate solutions to those problems. You will learn about a range of technologies, protocols, and approaches that can be regarded as networking essentials. Wireless LANs In this module you will learn about Wireless LANs, covering topics such as: wireless radio technologies and topologies; Wireless hardware; Wireless LAN Design; Site surveys, installation and configuration; Wireless LAN Security; 2 Subject to revalidation in June 2005. ©2005, Napier University Page 3

Network Security In this module you will learn about a range of principal theories and concepts underpinning state-of-the-art security methods.. You will learn how to analyse network security systems from modelling through to implementation, and you will learn about specifying and implementing solutions to network security system scenarios. Network & Server Administration This module will examine the diagnostics of all seven layers of the OSI model. It makes use of CISCO material to troubleshoot the bottom ISO layers, utilising the student’s knowledge of routers and switching technologies in performing diagnosis investigations. It also examines the upper layers of the OSI model, investigating the use of common internet services in Linux environments. This includes DNS and HTTP configurations. Remote Access & Network Applications In this module you will develop a critical understanding of the top three levels of the OSI model (Application, Presentation and Session) and their relationship with lower level protocols. You will develop your knowledge of the technologies used to permit remote access to networked applications. TEACHING & LEARNING STYLE You should note that this MSc/PgDip course is an intensive period of study, during which you will be required to devote a significant amount of time each week to achieve an award. (As a general guide, you can expect, as a full-time student to have on average to devote around forty hours of work per week throughout the semester in order to succeed. A part-time student may expect to have to devote around twenty hours per week on average (two modules)). A variety of teaching methods are employed, and a variety of learning styles are encouraged, including: lectures, tutorials and laboratory sessions, independent study – in which students are expected to undertake both directed and non-directed work (e.g. research to develop understanding of an area), project work, and individual and group working. We encourage, and expect, students to take an increasing responsibility for their own learning as the course progresses. This is supported through the modules of study, assisted by the various support departments such as our Learning Information Services. Our courses have an emphasis on meeting real-world challenges, with a mixture of both theory and practical content. We firmly believe that practice must be informed by sound understanding of both current technology and theory, with our courses reflecting this philosophy. You should note that our courses are not IT training courses – they are academic qualifications at a Masters level, with the structure and content focussed upon developing your knowledge of the chosen area to an advanced level. That said, many of our courses are tailored for students without a first degree in the computing subject area, and for that reason are suitable for those wishing to develop their understanding at a rapid pace to an advanced level. Each module assumes a commitment of ten hours per week per module. Much of this time is spent reading, undertaking research or practical work, or engaged in project work, in addition to attendance at timetabled sessions. An important part of the study process is therefore the development of good time and project management skills – although you will be relieved to hear that these are skills valued by many employers! Our Library Information Services has many excellent aids to developing sound study skills, which will be of particular use to those returning to education after a gap - perhaps of many years. FURTHER INFORMATION Admissions Applicants to the Masters course in Advanced Networking will be expected to have gained an Honours Degree in which at least two-thirds of the subjects studied are computing. It is expected that students will already have covered the fundamentals of networking either as part of their BSc undergraduate studies (or equivalent) or as part of their professional experience. For students whose first language is not English; a recognised language qualification equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.0. A lower level or alternative qualification may be considered where an applicant has appropriate work experience. TERM DATES: September 2006 Entry International (non-EU) Student Induction: week commencing 18 September 2006 Induction:- Week Commencing 25 September 2006 First Trimester: 2 October 2006 – 27 January 2007 Second Trimester: 5 February 2007 – 2 June 2007 MSc dissertation is a minimum of one semester’s full-time personal study, and a maximum of three. It has to be started no later than 1 June 2008, and must be completed by the start of June 2009. FEES: The fees for this course can be found online at http://www.napier.ac.uk/fees/. Fee levels for 2006-7 are yet to be announced at the time of printing this leaflet. The fees for 2005/6 are: (full-time) £4635 for EU/UK; £9471 for non-EU; part-time: £386 per 15 credits EU/UK; £789 per 15-credits for non-EU.
