A = Australia The world's smallest continent, but its sixth largest country!

B = Belize The only country in Central America that doesn’t have a costal border with the Pacific Largest unbroken barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere

C = Costa Rica The hghest point is Cerro Chirripó, at 3,810m. On a clear day, it is possible to see both the Caribbean and the Pacific from the peak.

D = Denmark A quarter of the bacon eaten in the UK comes from Denmark

E = Ethiopia ... Africa's oldest independent country...

F = Faroe Islands Irish Monks settled in the sixth century, introducing sheep and oats to the islands

G = Ghana Land of the cocoa pod....

H = Honduras It is among the 10 poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere with GDP per capita at US$3,100 per year!

I = Iceland They don’t have surnames so Icelanders are listed in the telephone directory alphabetically by first name.

J = Jordan At 420 metres (1,378 ft) below sea level, its shores are the lowest point on Earth that are on dry land.

K = Kyrgyzstan A landlocked country in Asia which has only been recognised as a country since 1991, and has a city called Osh!

L is for Libya Libya currently has no railways in it at all and hasn't had since 1965. There are plans to build one from Tripoli.

M is for Mongloia... In the winter you will find venders on the street selling ice cream from paper boxes. No need for a freezer at -30°C. Mongolia is the largest landlocked country in the world.

N = New Zealand Situated the same distance eastwards from Australia as London is from Moscow.

O = Oman The first Arabic country to have police officers! It is a vital transit point for crude oil, on the Musandam peninsula, and has less than 1% arable or permanent crop land.

P is for Peru Some 80000 of the population are of Japanese descent. They have been there for 100 years.

Q is for Qatar An Arab state on the Persian Gulf. 'Qatar' is an odd because it does not follow the "rule" that a "q" must always be followed by a "u".

R is for Russia Largest country in the world, covering 13% of the world .

S = San Marino An enclave in Italy. It is the smallest member of the Council of Europe and although it is nor a member of the EU it is allowed to use the Euro as its currency. Over 50% of its GDP is derived from tourism.

T .....Tuvalu [t:u:'valu] formerly the Ellice Islands, is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean midway between Hawaii and Australia. Nearest neighbours are Kiribati, Samoa and Fiji. Comprising four reef islands and five true atolls, with a gross land area of just 26 square kilometers (10 sq mi), it is the second-least populated independent country in the world

U is for Uruguay According to Transparency International, Uruguay is the second least corrupt country in Latin America (after Chile) with its political and labor conditions being among the freest on the continent.

V is for Vatican City At approx 44 hectares (108.7 acres), it is the smallest independent state in the world according to Wikipedia. Vatican City State has never had an army, navy or airforce but the Vatican bodyguard is made up of Catholic male (Swiss) citizens.

W is for Western Samoa (until 1997)...is now officially known as "The Independent State of Samoa. It is about halfway between Hawai‘i and New Zealand in the Polynesian region of the Pacific Ocean.

X is for Xylophone West A small nations whose history has survived dramatic interplay between triumph and failure, beauty and ugliness, colonialism and self-rule, nationalistic pride and the influence of foreign culture.

Y is for Yemen – Which has different meanings depending where you look... But according to ancient geographers, means "happy Arabia".

Z is for Zambia Home of Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders) - is a big chilli exporter, and many of the chillis are grown to stop elephants (who don't like chillies) destroying crops !
