  • @NienkevanBerkum Thank you for the comment. I view IK as a meta skill and is vital to developing how organizations practice daily continuous improvement. In particular, management must develop this coaching ability to change organization behaviors.

  • I realise that you have the need to visulize the quality of the skills of the one who applies this Toyota Kata. I do not understand this need completly. This instrument itself is usefull for every learning skill you like people to learn. What I find important is to make a stand for one standard way to measure your skill (or any skill for that matter). But that would be easy - for this in toyota kata, right ;)

  • Richard, coming week I'll use your CURRENT STATE IK skill-level icon. My plan is to come back to report you about progress made,

I'll test the hypotheses: progress can be made in just a few day's from skill-level AWARENESS to CAN APPLY to APPLY in day by day work and every day.

  • Like it Richard. It keeps the competency at hand - and shows where we need to go. It should enrich conversations that improve competency trajectories. Neat.

  • 1. Lets AddImprovement Kata Skill Levelto Value Stream MapsA proposal to the Lean communityby Rick FlemingJune 2013
  • 2. What’s the Idea?In the last few years the Lean topic has expanded toinclude not only Lean tools but also an underlyingLean management process. The latter may currentlybe best represented by the “Toyota Kata” researchand practice routines. This is a beneficialdevelopment because both technical and socialelements are important for Lean transformation. To help get the issue of skill development through deliberatepractice into the minds of management, lets get it on the mapValue Stream Mapping (VSM) has become an indispensible toolin Lean deployment. Interestingly, however, VSM visualizesprimarily technical issues of material & information flow. Itdoesn’t currently show behavioral/skill capability.I’d like to propose that we expand the suite of VSM icons toinclude an indication of Improvement Kata skill level (current andfuture state) at the individual processes in a value stream. Please take a look and let us know what you think…Rick Fleming2v1.0
  • 3. The Improvement KataThe Improvement Kata is a systematic and scientific trainingroutine that activates and mobilizes people’s creative capabilitiesto achieve challenging goals. It’s a means of developing solutionsand meeting challenges along uncertain paths, and models themanagement context within which Toyotas Lean tools wereintended to be applied. The pattern of the Improvement Kata can be taught to anyone, but to learn it you have to practice it. It’s a skill you develop.3v1.0

  • 7. Use dots to indicate the desired skill levelby the date of your future state mapFor example...Future State:Can apply the IK patternCurrent State:Has basic awareness of the IK pattern7Add Dotsfor the Future Statev1.0
  • 8. Whose IK skill levelshould appear on a VS map? With regard to Improvement Kata skill level the key personis, of course, the coach. In other words, the skill level of theprocess owner and their coach should appear on the VSmap. Typically this would be the supervisor or manager andtheir manager.Process OwnerSupervisor/ManagerProcess AManager8v1.0
  • 9. How Would this be Used?1. On the Current State Map include the IK skill levelof supervisors/managers.2. On the Future State Map add the dots to showthe target IK skill level of process supervisors andmanagers as a Challenge Condition.3. Apply the normal Improvement Kata / CoachingKata routine -- using the 5 Questions & PDCACycles Record – to develop the next target skilllevel at each process.9v1.0
