    1. What is Identity Theft ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WHAT IS IDENTITY THEFT? Become Informed and Up-to-Date! Read Articles regarding Identity Theft Are you aware of identity theft and the risk and hardship it can cause to your life if you become one of its victims? Maybe not yet. Don't believe that your innocence concerning identity thefts subtle workings is a protection from being violated. It's not! Identity theft is a malicious, dangerous and vicious crime nowadays. It is essential that you are properly informed of how it happens and it's implication for you and your family. You also need to be kept up to date on recent cases pertaining to such crimes. Staying informed and up to date is a step to prevent being attacked or becoming a victim of this crime. There are many websites on the Internet created specially to give you essential information, data and updates concerning identity theft. These websites will inform you about everything you have to know about identity thieves, how they operate, when and where they attack and what they usually do to carry out their malicious plan. This site will also help you get a better understanding of the crimes. The information they share to internet users, who are usually the first target of this crime, are through articles pertaining to identity theft. In these articles, they describe the subtle ways of identity thieves use to obtain strictly personal and confidential information about people. Articles concerning identity theft also describe ways to prevent being defrauded by identity thieves. There are also many articles about the laws being passed against identity theft. There are also in-depth explanations of assorted identity theft cases already tried in court. So what exactly is Identity Theft? According to articles concerning identity theft, the term refers is the stealing of another person’s personal and confidential information. These thieves go to great lengths to find out much personal information about a person such as - a person’s full name, social security number, credit card number, passport and ATM card information. The persons whose personal information and identity they steal are usually unaware of this fraudulent activity until after a crime has been committed. Not very it seems. One way that your data can be stolen is thru something called phishing - this is where you receive an email from your bank or credit card company. Usually this email will look authentic and will say that your account has been comprimised and that you must go to the banks website and re enter in your personal information. When you click thru to the site, it will look authentic, however when you submit your information it will be sent to the ID thieves who will then be able to gain access to your personal accounts and information. You should be extra careful in monitoring all financial transactions. Check your bnak and credit card statements for unexplained account activity, withdrawals, or fund transfers. Here are other areas where identity theft can occur: - medical transactions - bank transactions - mails and e-mails - credit card transactions - internet transactions Many people believe that it is only from the internet that ID theft can occur - however this is not true. Remember throwing away that credit card statement without shredding it?
