Goal Setting

The key to setting effective goals is three- fold:
You must know what you want
You must be clear about what you want
You must set the right goal for yourself
Many people set complex goals, or write them out in such a way that it is confusing.
Some people don’t know what they want or set goals that are not for themselves. For example, a
personal goal might be to give up smoking, but the reason is your partner or child has told you that
you should do it. This is not your goal. It’s not motivated by you.
The following exercises will help you set clear, meaningful goals based on the S.M.A.R.T goal setting
formula.
Let’s start off by defining what success is for you. Success is different for every person. It could be
money, power, fame, philanthropy, or anything that is important to you. Success for you might be
making an extra $1,000 a month. For someone else, it might be $10,000 a month. It’s all relative.
Think long and hard about this question.
Success for me is…
Define this as best you can. Be as descriptive as possible. For example:

know when I have achieved success, because I won’t have to worry about providing for the people I
care for and love.

This can be a 5-year goal. Again, be descriptive.
For example, my long-term goal is to have 3 successful businesses, both offline and online. Each
business will be as automated as possible, to allow me to earn passive, residual income. I will be
earning at least $20,000 per month online, and $20,000 per month through my seminar and
consulting business.
Now it’s your turn. Finish this sentence:

This will enable me to ensure that I can provide for all the people I love and care for. It will also
enable me to teach others how to become successful and run their own businesses.

Now break down the goal into manageable chunks. We’ll do this by setting the benchmark of what
we wish to achieve within 12 months.

Within twelve months I will be earning $10,000 per month by providing my clients with coaching
products. The majority of these products will be automated downloads, thus freeing my time to
concentrate on promotion and seminar delivery.

5. Within one month I will be finished developing one product, which I can market and sell to my target
audience. This product will be a downloadable product and the purchase, and delivery will be fully
automated.

As you can see, we’ve broken down our goals. We can do this further. Let’s say that you
want to make $5,000 per month. Break this down.
Your total income will be at least $60,000 per year
Your monthly income is $5,000
Your weekly income is going to be $1250
Your daily income, based on a 5 day week $250 (remember the aim is to have an automated
business)
Your hourly income is $31.25 – based on an 8-hour day.
Now you know your hourly rate of “pay.” As you can see $31.25 an hour is not a huge amount.
However, now you know what you’re hourly rate is (this will increase as your business grows).
Now making $5,000 a month seems manageable. You see it’s all about chunking down.

6. In order to achieve this goal, you need to make 1 sale an hour, price your product at $35 and get 8
sales a day. Your goal is specific, measurable, actionable, realistic, and timed. It’s a perfect
S.M.A.R.T. goal.
