Golden Rules <ul><li>Know your project inside out </li></ul><ul><li>Do your research – who are you asking for money? </li></ul><ul><li>Keep it simple and short </li></ul><ul><li>Use common denominator language </li></ul><ul><li>Do not assume a level of knowledge </li></ul><ul><li>Use examples / case studies – remember that people give to people </li></ul><ul><li>Ask for money! </li></ul>
  3. 3. Know your project inside out <ul><li>What do you want to do? </li></ul><ul><li>What is the need? </li></ul><ul><li>What will you achieve? </li></ul><ul><li>How long will it take? </li></ul><ul><li>How much will it cost and how much do you need? </li></ul>
  4. 5. KISS <ul><li>2 pages of info is usually enough </li></ul><ul><li>Follow a simple structure: introduce the charity, outline the need, outline the outcomes and timescales, outline the budget </li></ul><ul><li>Key tip: don’t shrink your work – edit it! </li></ul>

Language & Knowledge <ul><li>Avoid acronyms whenever possible, and explain them if you do have to use them </li></ul><ul><li>Use common language </li></ul><ul><li>Read your letter aloud to a friend or relative </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t assume a level of knowledge. You may know what the following words mean: Chapter, Diocese, Evangelical – but do funders?..... </li></ul>
