As one of the companies that has been at the forefront of the G-Cloud strategy since it’s inception in 2009 we would like to think that we have gained a great deal of knowledge and experience from the journey we have been on.For us today is about sharing some of that experience with you with two key objectives in mind:Show you the buyers of ICT services that Cloud is real, there are steps you need to take to move towards it but those steps are not hard.Show you that we have been on the journey alongside our customers and we can help you get there in a easy and risk free way. We understand the practicalities of the move.As someone who presents fairly regularly I wanted to find a theme for my presentation today that was a little more interesting than some of the basic practicalities of what the cloud is about but to help you understand that they are still important to success
Many of you will have seen the historic parachute jump form the edge of space by Felix Baumgartner on the 14th October 2012 and I would like to use this as a great example of the practical steps taken to ensure success in what was an amazing human feat.First off I would like to say that Felix is only 3 months younger than myself which is encouraging for me that I too old to be an adrenalin junkie!!What is interesting though is that the idea for a jump that would allow a human to break the speed of sound whilst in free fall was formed in 2005 some 7 years before it happened. The years of planning and preparing is familiar to SCC, our involvement in the G-Cloud started back in 2009.What has this to do with Cloud? Cloud Computing is a fundamental change to how businesses will consume ICT services, it changes the commercial model, it changes the consumption model, it changes the service delivery model, it impacts the traditional security model and it changes the capabilities our organizations have to deliver services in new ways that make us more efficient, more agile and better able to deliver the right services at the right time to the customers we have. Because of this fundamental change we have to look at many aspects of what we do today in order to understand if the new Cloud model fits what we want to do and delivers what the organization needs from an ICT service. In the beginning there are key questions we need to ask.Am I thinking about cloud services but don’t know what cloud is or if I am ready?Do I have to upgrade some hardware or software?Do I need to do a project quickly? Is capital expenditure impossible?Do I need to move out of the building where my DC is?
The edge of space is a very extreme environment for a human to survive in so you have to have the right tools for the job. As a start the temperature ranges goes from -70 degrees Celsius up to plus 40 degrees.Felix needed to take these things and many many more in to consideration, he needed a reliable solution to get him to the edge of space, once there he needed a stable platform from which he could make the jump and in order to survive he needed the security of a very sophisticated pressurized suit which would keep him safe for the trip. When starting the journey to the cloud there are some key things that need to be consideredCan I find a solution that will fit my needs and are there organisations that I can trust to help advise and transition my infrastructure? Are there suppliers that have the right platforms and solutions that will deliver the cost savings I need whilst enabling me to deliver what the organisation needs? What about security? Is the cloud secure? Can I trust the cloud suppliers to hold the data I need to deliver my services? There are amongst a number of considerations that need to be covered in the early stages of understanding if Cloud Computing is right for your organisation. How much do I utilise my current ICT?HardwareStorageNetworkWhat are my information assurance considerations? IL2, IL3?How do I understand what is available in the market? What are the procurement things I have to consider? What is the impact on my people?Does the business case stack up?
When Felix descended through the atmosphere there were different things to think about and actions to take depending on where he was on his journey, it may have taken him 2 hours and 21 minutes to ascend but it only took 9 minutes and 18 seconds to get back to earth and during that time he experienced very different sensations depending upon the layer of the atmosphere he was in. Up in the stratosphere he was weightless for the first 25 seconds of the free fall whilst accelerating to 843.6mph at 50 seconds. He did not even feel the shockwave as he passed through the sound barrier as the air was so thin.Passing through the subsequent layers the air thickened and slowed his progress whilst handing him back some control over direction and speed. The analogy here is that Cloud Computing consists of three different layers, we have Software as a Service at the top, we come down in to Platform as a Service and then to the bottom is Infrastructure as a Service. Overall control also lines up the same as an ICT professional working in an ICT department in the cloud computing world you have more control in the traditional sense of how an ICT infrastructure is managed.
To get up in to the stratosphere Felix needed something big and capable of taking the journey to deliver him safely to his jump height. His balloon was amazing not only in size but also lack of weight but amazing performance, when he started his ascent the balloon was climbing at up to 1,400 feet per minute which is faster than many small powered aircraft can achieve.Cloud computing fundamentally changes how ICT is procured, you only pay for what you use and you don’t need to pay up front for the capacity you think you may need, you don’t have to buy the big balloon to get you in to the clouds, you can start small but consume more when you need it. We have seen this with a number of our customers now where they own infrastructures that have an average utilisation of below 10% yet they own and have paid for all of the capacity. This is where Cloud Computing cost savings can really be made through only paying for what you use and releasing unused capacity. It is also where understanding where you are today is also key.
Felix needed to get to the stratosphere without expending too much of his energy and reducing the risk of things going wrong in the transit. The pressurized capsule allowed him to travel up to 128100 feet above the earth, he was able to monitor information about the flight from within whilst being protected from the steadily decreasing temperature.Platform as a Service abstracts the developers from the infrastructure servers below allowing them to be more creative and innovative with the software they are writing, in the world of cloud computing platform really represents the future direction for software that will be developed specifically to run in a cloud world, it will deliver great scalability, resilience and security but will importantly lead to greater innovation. The purpose of Felix’s free fall was actually a scientific experiment to gather data about all aspects of free fall from space in order to make space travel safer in the future.
Probably the most important part of Felix’s equipment was his pressurized space suit, it was the one component between him and the extreme environment of space and was there to secure him from the harsh environment outside and keep him alive, the suit was directly derived from a space suit however had never been tested for this type of free fall so it was a step in to the unknown. The biggest question we always get about Cloud Computing is around security and it is an area in which we excel, being the first company to gain pan-government accreditation at IL3 our information assurance team are some of the most experienced people in the UK on the security requirements surrounding the public sector and cloud computing and that knowledge now extends down in to many of the architects and technical people that design and build customer infrastructure helping our customer solutions be secure by design. We know that the technologies and solutions deployed within our service are far beyond those that can be afforded on a customer by customer basis therefore leveraging the cloud economies of scale to deliver greater security than can be delivered on premise. Before transitioning solutions to the cloud it is key that you understand the IA requirements of the solution as be it IL2 or IL3 it makes a difference to the price and so having a good understanding will help minimize expense. Will I need a moon landing craft?Assess software against business needConduct a free trialConduct a PoC or PilotIntegrate with current systemsMigrate data Develop service management processes
As we wrap up my session there are a few practical steps you can take to make sure you are in the best possible shape to have the Cloud discussion.First off, I can guarantee that all of you will consume some cloud services at some point in the future if you are not already doing so. It is a different service delivery model with different requirements for skills or different operational processes which means it will effect the daily lives of those ICT professionals that work in the ICT department, those people need to be engaged in a positive way as few people like change. Engaging them early will help any form of transition be a real success.Assess your environment, understand your infrastructure, data, security and capabilities that way you will see the opportunities for Cloud, the no go areas and the complex and challenging areas so that you will have an informed viewTry to understand what sort of cloud you might want IaaS, PaaS or SaaSBrowse the cloudstore and see what is available create a long list and engage the suppliers, see what you get back.If you don’t understand a suppliers offerings, tell them, most want the feedback and will react.
The bottom line is you can’t engage too early either with the supplier community or your internal ICT professionalsWith that I would like to round off with a quick video of what Felix did.
