4. 4. Scholarship Scams Online

Federal Trade Commission’s tell tale signs of a scholarship scam:

"The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back."

"You can't get this information anywhere else."

"I just need your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship."

"We'll do all the work."

"The scholarship will cost some money."

"You've been selected by a 'national foundation' to receive a scholarship" or "You're a finalist" in a contest you never entered.

http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/oig/misused/sscams.html

http://www.finaid.org/scholarships/common.phtml

Youll find more than 1.7 million financial awards worth more than $7.6 billion ..”

Sign into Databases from the Virtual Library. The password is your G# and the PIN is the last 4 digits of your G#. Go to ALPHABETICAL listing of databases and select Testing and Education Reference Center. Choose COLLEGE SEARCH. The SCHOLARSHIP SEARCH is the last link. You will need to register to use this search. Usually it is a grant that is based on work one is qualified to do now unlike an internship that teaches one skills as one works. However, sometimes the definition blurs into internship and scholarship.

Using GOOGLE with search phrases with .gov works better such as, "Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students“ and .gov
