Responsive Classroom

A Practical Approach
The Responsive Classroom approach offers
practical strategies for teachers. Two of the
most commonly implemented strategies are
Morning Meeting and Teacher Language.

Morning Meeting
Teachers lead students in a daily gathering that uses a consistent format of friendly greeting, sharing of news, having fun together, and warming up for the day ahead. Morning Meeting usually lasts 15 – 20 minutes.

Teacher Language
Teachers use language carefully to promote learning, reinforce positive behavior, and build community.

Schools and Districts Use the Responsive Classroom Approach
Individual classrooms are the primary influence on children’s school life. But classrooms exist within the context of the larger school.
Children can learn at their best when the adults at school work to achieve consistency in climate and expectations throughout the school.

A Research-Backed Approach
In the past ten years there have been two studies looking at the impact of Responsive Classroom practices on children’s learning and classroom experience:
Social and Academic Learning Study 2001—2004, Dr. Sara Rimm-Kaufmann Meets No Child Left Behind standards for evidence of effectiveness
Responsive Classroom Efficacy Study 2008 – present, Dr. Sara Rimm-Kaufmann Meets No Child Left Behind gold standard for evidence of effectiveness
