  • 4. Facts: Inequality • A famous sociologist, A H Halsey said that there are two kinds of inequality. • Inequality of opportunity is where people do not have the same chances in life. • Inequality of outcome is where people may have the same opportunities, but cannot take advantage of them for social reasons.
  • 5. Activate: evidence on gender inequality • There are slightly more women than men in Britain at all ages of the population. • More boys are born than girls. Boys and men tend to die earlier and at a younger age. They are more likely to be born with genetic disease, experience accidents and to have an unhealthy life style. Until recently, more men than women smoked and drank alcohol. • If men and women have equality of outcome, they will appear in the statistics in the same numbers that they do in the population. Fill in your table to work out if men and women are really equal in Britain today.
  • 6. Think, Pair, Share • Do we have inequality of opportunity for the genders in Britain? • Do we have inequality of outcome for the genders in Britain?
  • 7. Demonstrate: How are men and women unequal Either write a paragraph or create a spider diagram to help you remember: use the pictures as clues. the points. Clues: Childcare Housework Male bosses People living longer The work women do The socialisation of little girls.
  • 8. Consolidate • Imagine you are the Prime Minister of Britain. What laws would you have to make sure that men and women had equal chances of the best jobs and pay? • Does equality for men and women matter? Why?
