Course: BTEC National Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Health and Social Care Unit Title: Unit 24 – Introduction to Counselling Skills for Health and Social Care Settings Hand out date: Thursday 19th September 2013 Hand in date: Thursday 9th of January 2014 Student: Assessor: Wilhelmenia Etoga Ngono Scenario As a trainee counsellor, one of your first assignments is for you to develop and practice with other members of your course the various counselling skills which you will use in your practice. Following a visit from a practicing counsellor, you have been requested to create a step by step guide of the skills required in order to become an effective counsellor and to implement and review your abilities to develop those skills. Criteria reference To achieve the criteria the evidence must show that the learner is able to Task No Page no’s or evidence e.g., booklet, video P1 Describe the processes for initiating, maintaining, developing and concluding a helping relationship. Task 1b Step by step flow chart. P2 Demonstrate the use of counselling skills in a simulated environment. Task 2a Simulated Role Plays P3 Review the strengths and weaknesses of own counselling skills development and practice. Task 3 Reflective review of feedback provided by observers in P2 M 1 Assess how integrating counselling skills should support clients. Task 1b Factsheet M2 Assess how the development of counselling skills affects self-development. Task 2b JOHARI window report D1 Analyse own strengths and weaknesses in using counselling skills.   • 2. Task 1a: In order to achieve P1, you will need to create a step by step flow chart of the processes for initiating, maintaining, developing and concluding a helping relationship. You will need to ensure that you use key terminology under section 1 of your unit content handout and will be required to use at least 3/4 per sub-section underlined above. Task 1b: In order to achieve M1, you will need to assess using key theorists such as Egan, Rogers and Maslow how the integration of counselling skills into a patient care plan can support them further. You will need to create a factsheet which assesses the benefits/downsides of various skills identified in P1 in supporting a client better. Task 2a: In order to achieve P2, you will be taking part in a simulated role play in which you will be given the opportunity to practice the many skills you have learned about in your P1 and M1 tasks. You will be required to write one role play scenario which will be used in the simulated role plays. The role plays will be recorded and uploaded for your personal review onto the course blog. Task 2b: In order to achieve M2, you will need using the JOHARI window to assess how your development of counselling skills for P2 has affected your self-development. You will to consider Luft and Ingham theory when assessing how your own knowledge of who you are has been affected by developing and using various counselling skills. Task 3: In order to achieve P3, you will to write a reflective review of your own counselling skills demonstrated for P2 through the feedback which you have received by the observers. Task 4: In order to achieve D1, you will need to analyse in a report format, the strategies used in health and social care when using counselling skills to create and develop a helping relationship. You will need to make references to the role play situations uploaded onto the blog to provide evidence.
