  • STARTER Complete the card sort activity that has been placed on your desk. Once this is completed, then consider what alternative headings your could use for these – for example, „inequality in the family‟ could be one heading. Extension task - provide some evaluation of a selection of these statistics. Try to use sociological explanations for this. These statistics could be used as evidence in a 20 mark question, or it could be linked to sociological explanations in a 40 mark question.
  • GENDER INEQUALITY – GATHERING EVIDENCE TO GATHER EVIDENCE FOR GENDER INEQUALITY IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY LITERACY – TO COMPLETE OUR GLOSSARIES
  • GENDER INEQUALITY Gender inequality can be seen all around us, although sometimes it is difficult to quantify and therefore prove beyond reasonable doubt. In politics we can consider how many members of parliament are female (147 out of 650), how many members of the cabinet are female (4 out of 22), but we cannot quantify how this inequality impacts on the lives of women in Britain. Think! As a sociologist, how would you research the impacts of these statistics?
  • GENDER INEQUALITY There is quantitative evidence that shows inequality in many walks of life. What could some of these be? The family Crime and punishment The workplace/inc ome Financial PoliticsSport Religion Domestic abuse You will each be given one of these area, and asked what sort of evidence you would expect to see that shows inequality. Now use your synoptic skills to explain some of this inequality. For example, “with on a small proportion of MPs that are female, it could be argued that young girls are not socialised into believing that women should be influential.” Representations in the media
  • USING EVIDENCE You have been provided with evidence of gender inequality. Complete the following tasks. 1. Complete the statistics task on page two of the booklet 2. Plan an answer, using these statistics, for the following question: “Outline the evidence that the UK is a patriarchal society” 3. Write a paragraph explaining at least three of these statistics using key concepts from AS (socialisation, patriarchy, feminism and so forth)
  • PLENARY You have five minutes to memorise at least three pieces of evidence that you have been given today, and then you will need to write these down on a post it as you leave.
