3. What the heck is stocks - in layman term please!
A Stock is basically a slice or a share.
If I think of a cake, each slice is a share.
For example, PLDT offers 5,000 shares of stocks
to the public (that’s me, public!). Just an
example to illustrate: this 5,000 shares is 50% of
total PLDT’s company value so if you buy 1,000
shares, I own 20% of PLDT. Voila!
Another example: PLDT wants to sell shares of
stock to raise money that it will use to further
grow the company (maybe to buy Sun cellular
tehee). Either that or they borrow money from
the bank - and we know how huge the interest
of borrowing money form the bank, that even
big companies try to avoid it.

4. Why would I invest money in stocks?
I do invest in stocks because:
- I do not have huge money to acquire real
estate properties yet or start my own business
- I can make up to 30% growth of my
investment, or more!
- It will be in my control and my decision
- Philippines poses to grow very well currently up
to 2 years, healthy financial market!
- It requires only 1 hour of my time in a week to
trade wisely

5. How much money I need
to start stock investing?

That’s my initial investment, my friend
This is because that is the minimum required amount to
open an online trading account in the Philippines. I used
Citiseconline (which recently changed their name to
COLFinancial). Here’s how I did it.
I googled first online trading accounts available in the
Philippines and I have seen COL and two other bank-
affiliated companies of Metrobank and BPI. I chose COL
since it has the easiest, no-fuss process of enrollment. I
gathered the requirements (which are not much) and visited
their office in Ortigas, same building as PSE. This was just in
January 2012. It wasn't too busy that day and a very nice
lady helped me open the account. It was less than
15minutes including filling out forms and paying in the
cashier. Towards the evening, I received an email activation
of my account and the next day, I was able to log-in and start
buying my first companies
Php5,000 at 30% growth in a year will only yield Php1,500.
So I decided to put some more money and invest a total of
Php 24,000. You can also put money little by little every pay-
day and build your portfolio of companies little by little as
well. Apparently, this is what famous Bo Sanchez’ household I would like to appreciate COL’s offer of “online trading account”
maids are doing. They buy stocks every month! as this revolutionise the way people trade stocks. I can never
imagine myself talking to a broker to trade buy or sell my shares.
Note to myself: If you are new, start small. Then, as you get Just too hassle, especially if you have a day job. This online
