With gradual recovery of global economy and rising downstream demand in H1 2009, many multinational companies have announced price hikes recently. However, most Chinese manufacturers have maintained low prices to stimulate sales facing the intense domestic competition and slow recovery of downstream demand in China. Besides, TiO2 trade volume has maintained uptrend in the first four months with the government's support on export-oriented sectors requiring high-grade TiO2. Facing the intense competition and low profit margin, many companies have been seeking expansion or enhancing cost competitiveness to tide over the crisis. For instance, Jinan Yuxing and Jiangxi Tianguang are carrying out expansion plans, and Pangang Group has cooperated with some new entrants to lower production cost and expand market shares. As to raw material sourcing, the fast development of titanium sponge is to further tighten titanium ore supply for TiO2 producers, but sulfuric acid will see sufficient supply with stable price this year, hence it will not impact TiO2 price as greatly as it did in 2008. In H1 2009, the downstream demand has witnessed slow recovery in China, but it is still not strong enough to sustain large and long-term price hike.
