Lies, Damned Lies and Statistics
Mark Twain suggested there are three kinds of lies: lies, damned
lies and statistics. Here we will use statistics to uncover some
important truths about mobile broadband (MBB). This report
complements Yankee Group's April 2009 Report, 'Mobile
Broadband Can Dodge the Gutter, in which we advise service
providers on sustainable MBB differentiation strategies. In this
report, we take a more quantitative approach. We examine recent
market statistics relating to MBB demand, user profiles and traffic
patterns. This data provides answers to some important questions:
' How big is the MBB market, and how much larger can it become'
' Which customer segments will drive demand, and what will
their usage profiles look like'
' Will MBB cannibalize or complement land-line broadband
(BB) services'
Methodology
For this report, we review market data relating to MBB adoption
and usage in Europe. This includes information from mobile
network operators (MNOs), such as Orange, Vodafone and
Telefonica O2, as well as some land-line providers, such as
Telekom Austria. We also analyze market data from several
industry regulators, including Ofcom (U.K.), NPT (Norway),
Anacom (Portugal) and ComReg (Ireland). We also leverage
Yankee Group's market forecasts, in particular the September
2009 edition of our EMEA Mobile Forecast.
What Is MBB'
When discussing MBB, definitions are extremely important,
but various definitions currently abound. In the context of this
report, we define MBB as the use of data cards, USB modems
or embedded wireless to connect via laptop or netbook devices.
We exclude access via mobile handsets, smartphones or other
pocketable devices.
