In the past two months, the US has suffered the worst drought in more than 50 years, negatively affecting its production of corn and soybean and causing the price of these crops to increase fast. Meanwhile, corn and soybean production in South America has also been reduced by a severe drought. As a result, global supply of corn and soybean becomes tighter. According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on Aug. 15, the EI Nino phenomenon will appear in the next two months. The appearance of EI Nino phenomenon will bring plenty of rain, which will be favorable for the growth of corn and soybean in South America. Therefore, the production of crops in this region is expected to increase in 2012/13, which will help ease the global food shortage.(1). Peru's import enlargement of agricultural means of production benefits its farmers, but some associationsoppose it because the quality of agricultural produces will be negatively affected.(2). Bolivia's crop yield is decreasing due to land degradation caused by a low utilization of land and excessiveapplication of pesticides.(3). Argentina signed an agreement worth USD6.4 billion with Brazilian mining giant Vale on the productionand export of potash.(5). The Uruguayan Ministry of Agriculture will increase the variety of GM crops to be registered in Uruguay.(6). MAPA increasingly encourages farmers to use biopesticides instead of chemical ones.(7). The Official Gazette published a statement on July 19, 2012 that IBAMA will re-evaluate fourneonicotinoid insecticides because they may negatively affect bees.(8). With two-year experimental planting, the commercial launch of 4 kinds of GM corns will be approved inParaguay in 2012 or 2013.(9).
